Speccy - divide - incompatible games and demos! Firmware flashing? Eek!

Okay so I got this thing now. It´s my first Spectrum ever.

Basically, only some games work and others... not so much.

Manic miner always works.
Jet Set Willy always works.
Go miner Willy!

Rodland never works, shows menu but when trying to start the game it goes back to flashing divide logo. Guess I´ll just play miggy version then.

Head over heels never works. Depending on version of rom it either just doesn´t start, goes to white screen or shows menu for a few seconds and crashes, often to flashing divide logo. Now this is sad actually, I would love to play this on speccy!

R-type starts but shows corrupted graphics. I was hoping to play this with speccy

None of them start. For some, nothing happens when I choose them from list, for others the spectrum goes to white screen where I can start coding basic, I guess. But I was hoping to get some crazy demoscene graphics and beeps

Should I even bother trying flash update?

I probably can´t ask for help trying to get working versions of games because that would probably be illegal.

I would like to ask for any and all help getting scene demos running though!

edit: okay...progress! if I do not plug in the ram turbo joystick interface then I can run rod-land and head over heels! So maybe I have to change to some other joystick interface? I am not sure.

I am asking because flashing incompatible version would most probably brick the divide.

Should I even bother trying flash update?

In other words, is my problem more likely the divide or the machine itself?


To make it really simple...

Did I buy wrong version of spectrum? I have to get +2B to run demos? Is there any other way? Was this a big mistake? Then again I heard that +2B is actually less compatible with games so it would be a bit of a bad swap, I reckon.

Hmm, it could be just that I need to use some tricks like manually loading instead of loading from the directory tree menu.

IIRC I saw demos running on my 128k, Zetr0 had them running when I was at his house.

Best thing is to search sites like World of spectrum forums for info

Indeed. Made something like a duplicate thread at world of spectrum.

I´ll try and make the best of what works with this and concentrate on that.

No firmware update needed. (okay well maybe for that one demo that was mentioned it could be needed but at least not for all of them, just ran a couple)

I just had to type in command to load demo

it was LOAD ""

Nothing between the " and the ". First I didn´t know about the command at all, then I thought I would have to put the filename between the "s but no.
(some games load by just selecting them from menu, but others... well they need that command after that. Don´t know why but that´s just how it is)

I got mescaline synestesia working right now.

The musics particularly in some of these demos are amazing! I´ll have to make my own youtube caps.

SO AWESOME!!! So colorful! YAY!


Also, turns out I have to connect audio cable to MIC instead of EAR to get sounds in demos and some games!!! Why?!? Another issue solved!
