Hello,
I didn't want to start a wanted thread yet, as I don't have all the details clear yet and you know what they say... Fail to prepare, prepare to fail and all that... So any thoughts and suggestions on the following would be appreciated!

I think I want a 1200. This 500 I have here is great, I love it, especially with all the gubbins hanging off of it, but there are a couple of things which bug me about it...

Size - It's so big! Wide AND with the A520 on the back, deep too! The accellerators hanging out the left-side don't help either, It's only a matter of time before I throw something at them and and it all goes up in smoke!

AGA - I think I need this in my life. A little more screen res, that last 20% of WHDLoad games, colours...

Chip RAM - I only have 1mb and only because of the ACA 500. 1MB is treating me pretty good mind you, since I got the ACA 1221EC I haven't really had too much trouble when it comes to finding RAM. I may later though, with the plans...

Connectability - The ACA 500 is OK for transporting files to and from PC. Supports PC format Flash cards and all. What I'd really like is network access to cut down on the need to shutdown every time I need to move a file across. The ACA500Plus supports hotswap >le sigh<

If I could overcome the size and connectability problems, I could see this becoming my daily drive. I mean, it's been on my desk for months already and it's turned on pretty much as long as I'm here, so it's close.

So, thinking about a stock 1200, I have the following to hand to add to it:

30GB 2.5 IDE HD

2x 4GB CF Card

ACA 1221EC -- I realise this is not a huge upgrade, at least in CPU terms from stock, but I might as well make use of it.

Linksys WPC54G V3.1 PCMCIA Wireless card - I've been trying to figure out whether this has the Prism chipset you appear to need for Amiga Wi-fi'ness. I remain unclear on this point. I've no experience with Amiga networking (though plenty of current experience) so any pointers or recommendations there would be nice. I'm also no opposed to an ethernet solution, I was looking at the Plipbox the other day, but it seems a little expensive.

Gotek Floppy Emulator - Actually, I don't have this yet, but I will do tomorrow hopefully! Edit: This literally just arrived!!

What I don't have, which I imagine you need for wifi due to encryption, is an RTC compatible with a 1200 but I understand these are common and inexpensive.

So with all this in mind, does the collective "you" think that buying a stock-ish 1200 would do the business? Is there some A1200 "essential" part I don't know about?

Oh, one more thing, I see the 1200 has composite video port on board, I assume I can just hook this up to Scart/composite ports as I do with the 500 and 520 modulator?

Sounds like a decent plan. An A1200 with ACA1221ec and a CF card or two will take you far. I don't see the point of the Gotek though since an A1200 is not very compatible with floppy games anyway and you'd mainly be using WHDLoad. Although an A500 takes up a lot of desk space, remember that its flat surface does allow stuff to be stacked on top - this is not the case with an A1200.

No, just no... (using composite is torture - look into some RGB solution, e.g. if you are using a TV with SCART already, chances are it would work with an RGB SCART cable)

Yeah I would agree:
I don't really see the point in the gotek on an a1200 using whdload.
Put a wanted thread on here for a compatible wired pcmcia network card. Reasonably cheap and cheerful - both mine use them including the a1200 with the aca card.
RGB scart probably the way to go.
Should leave you with a nice setup.
If you want to avoid transferring games via network, get the adapter that runs the c.f. card nicely out of the expansion socket under the floppy drive and then simply run winuae off the card and copy whatever you need that way?

An alternative to a wifi card could be to use an external ethernet to wifi bridge. I found a small and cheap one. I then connect it to the Amiga using plain Ethernet, and then the bridge will connect to whatever network I want to use through WPA2.

Well, to be honest, I just wanted the Gotek for a play. I've not had one before and they seem neat. As it turns out, I've spent all day farting around and not been able to get it working, which is frustrating.

Yeah I picked up an internal gotek for an a500 I have around somewhere a few years ago. Got some games to work but ironically not the one I really wanted. Got fed up and picked up another a1200 instead.
As I said, although it is networked it's just easier to pull the c.f. card and run winuae to copy files over.

Finally got the stoobid Gotek working. Seems whoever had this Amiga before me somehow reversed the floppy drive cable. I guess as these are straight wired that doesn't matter (unlike PC) -well, you learn something every day.

Thanks for the tips on networky stuff, too.

Linksys WPC54G is a cardbus 32-bit card. It's probably got pins and a gold connector. It won't work with Amiga 1200, as Amiga has got 16-bit PCMCIA.

If you look for a WPA2/AES PCMCIA compatible card then have a look here:
