Hi all.
Im trying to set up an 80gig 2.5" samsung ide hard drive for my a1200 as a master backup.
I have classic wb 3.9 up and running thru winuae and installed the latest nsdpatch. Ive added the drive and gone in to hdtoolbox and tried to install it so i can partition and format but i keep getting an error.

Error 7 in drive description

Any help would be greatfuly recieved :)

Have you started winuae from command prompt with -disableharddrivesafetycheck switch?

That isn't needed on newer versions of WinUAE.

It is other that you need to start WinUAE with Admin rights or that you need to clean off any Windows partitions, use Diskpart to do that :)

If you do a quick search there are a few posts about it. Be careful not to nuke one of your other HDDs :coffee:

Thanks steve. Got the drive to recognise now but cant format my partitions with the cli prompt sfsformat. I get a "wrong args" error.
I will never get my head round amiga software

It might be that your Winuae partitions have the same names as your physical drive. I've set up a Winuae config with partitions hd0, hd1 etc so I can set up physical drive partitions as dh0, dh1 etc. You then need to use a command something like 'hd1:smartfilesystem/sfsformat DRIVE dh0: NAME Workbench'. Just make sure you get your file paths right.

I removed the sfsformat icon from c and replaced it. Now i think ive cracked it. Once set up do i still need idefix ? The popup is doing my head in. I have no intention of adding another ide device

hi mate have you looked at my guides in my sig they may help

Johnim if it wasnt for your guides id have smashed it all up with a hammer in frustration lol.
I have noticed something else though. The hard drive light stays on all the time now. Its just dimm when inactive and btight during access.
Any ideas or is this normal ?

the drive light should go out when not in use.

are you getting drive read write errors?

can you check all the connections on the ide on the motherboard for bad solder joints as well, just in case.
