Hi all, i've spotted some new & sealed Turbo Grafx for sale and have always wanted to try the PC Engine as it looks so cool with the Hu-cards.

However i'm wondering whether i should get the Turbo Grafx or look for a PC Engine?

Is there any real difference between the two and can the TG be RGB modded in the same way the PCE can? The only thing i can see is the different shape and colour of the consoles. Also, does the PCE everdrive work fine with the TG or does it need some modification to the console?

Thanks

Explains why the tg is bigger.

"In regards to the restyled shape of the machine, it was going to be sold at a relatively high price and the customers we asked questioned why something so expensive should be in such a small package. They believed that if it’s small it should cost less, not more."

There is a reason why there are so many NIB tg floating around. People want the PC Engine instead ;)

Hi Scrappy, I bought one of those new Turbo Graphic consoles a few months back. It is indeed the newest retro console I have, it arrived double boxed and totally pristeen. Heaven knows where these have been sitting for the last 20 odd years. I paired this up with the appropriate EverDrive, absolutely fantastic. I looked into an RGB mod but for me it looked very complicated, I'm sure you would have no trouble. Let me know if you want some pics of the machine or its internals!

But why? Is there an actual difference that makes the PC Engine more desirable?

Thanks wm, i've looked at the RGB mod for the PCE and that seemed simple enough, just wondering if the TG has the same option?

Good to know that the everdrive works as standard though.

I think it might have been an issue with some games running slightly slower than originally intended. To be honest I havent encountered any issues. Although the EverDrive may be fixing this and I don't know about it! I only have the one original game card so it could all be down to the EverDrive.

I also opted for the PCE (Core Grafx because of the AV output) over the TG purely for cosmetic reasons. Secretly though I wish I'd gone for the Turbo Duo.

I also got a six button controller which was nice.

If you get one of the PAL turbografx 16s, then they run the games 17% slower, yes.

A turbografx 16 hucard won't play in a PCE and vice versa and since there are many more PCE games (adapters are expensive and hard to come by), the PCE may be the more attractive option.

Personally I opted for a Duo-R, which is the most reliable of Duo's.

I've got the PC Engine CoreGrafX too, I can't comment on the others but I went for this as it has the AV output and it's super small/compact.

Being a fan of collecting Games I've also musteed up quite a collection of Japanese HUCards for it. Some of the games are the nearest I have ever played to the arcade!

I'd highly recommend one. I still want to get the CD attachment for it eventually but it's a luxury I can't afford right now.

Had a TurboDuo at one time, Dragon Slayer, Cosmic Fantasy 2 and Ys Books 1+2 were fantastic RPGs on it.

RGB modding the PCE/Turbografx16 is very, very easy - No one should be using the composite av out ;)

So the main difference seems to be the 50/60hz issue.
After a little googling I came across a page stating that changing the clock crystal from the 17mhz installed to a 21mhz (which apparently can be harnessed from a snes) will make the pal machine run at 60hz.

The RGB looks simple enough too. I may wait a week or two though since consolegoods have some listed on their site that are already region and RGB modded for not much more

Just make sure you're not stuck in 50hz land
