I need to rant about something! The Christmas Grinch coming out in me lol

Ikea. Terrible! Has put me of off for life. I purchased a few items via online and they stuffed up by forgetting important parts of the order. I also orderd a Desk for myself, picked a solid wood one with the idea it would at least be solid and last. Well within 24hours it began to "Cup" or "Bow" (as it is called in the carpentary trade).

The table top is solid wood, quite thick and even has metal brace support bars routed in. But this has been completely useless and the table has still warped which has now caused me issues with stability.

So, I will have to start all over but this time I am going the hard route and thinking about building one. All I need is a flat large surface and 4 legs. Any additional support underneath will be good.

Any ideas? anyone been in this situation?

Happy Christmas :D

Solid and long lasting aren't words I associate with Ikea. If you want a solid desk you need to go to a real furniture store and not a flat-pack expert like Ikea / MFI (do they still exist?).

If you want something nice in modern times, either buy vintage, or make it yourself.

Modern furniture is either all particleboard garbage, or just poorly made, or both...

There's a place just up the M5 from us that sells office furniture/tops. I plan to buy a few in January to create the new office as anything available in Exeter is just sh1te.

That sounds like a plan!

I have a vintage table here but the surface area is way too small for what I need! I have no car so hunting around is hard :(
I know antique places would yeild a decent table n all!

If you need a desk make your own, you get the size and design you want that way too. If you're not good just use mdf from a hardware store most of them will cut to size for you too so all you need do is use blocks and screws to assemble it. Just plan it out well and you end up with cheap very practical computer furniture.

Building yourself is a good cheap way. However for a really solid desk you would need to spend more on proper office funiture or look at second hand or auctions. I spent a lot on office furniture back in 2001, and it was worth it as the desk is as good as the day I bought it.

Regarding Ikea, you get what you pay for. Ikea has some great storage solutions and I use their modular units and cupboards, but you have to realise you are buying flatpack funiture, not stuff built to last. You can however easily customise their stuff for your own needs, which I find great and cheap. I also love the fact if you need an extra shelf you can just get one for a couple of pounds.
