I want to get a big screen tablet type device which I will mainly be using to read Amiga magazines in PDF format - any other functionality it had would be a bonus..

I have set a little money aside so it doesn't have to be the cheapest option - I would like the screen to be the best quality I could get and my eyes would appreciate a big screen so I wouldn't have to scroll around so much.

I have seen various models and types available and now I've got a bit confused... I thought I would gage opinions here first before I spent my money... any recommendations? :help:

I know that I need to be able to transfer stuff onto it so USB ports would be good and wireless would be great.

I got a cheap android pad and to be honest it's garbage lol.

I understand the Samsung galaxy tab is supposed to be pretty good :)

Wrong. The Google Nexus 10 (made by Samsung) has a higher resolution and dpi than the iPad. It's also cheaper, and runs Android 4.2, so is less restricted than iOS, and IMO Android 4.2 finally surpasses Apple.

Therefore I recommend you look at the Nexus 10 if you want a tablet with a high resolution large 10" screen.

Otherwise get a Nexus 7. The best 7" tablet on the market at the moment. Perfect size for single handed use and for reading. And a brilliant price that is hard to match. It also has a quad core cpu and 12 core gpu so can handle anything you like at the moment. I've owned one since just after they came out and still enjoying it. Highly recommended.

nexus 7, being a 7 incher is not really suited to pdf reading imho. also while the price is great, you fail to mention it doesn't have any display out (cause google wants you to buy nexus q) and no sd card slot. (from another n7 owner :))

about n10. while the resolution is high, it is a pls screen. which i doubt will look as good as an s ips+.

I beg to differ. We have the ipad 4 and Nexus 10 at work and the Nexus screen is better than the "retina" display. Both do look good, but the Nexus is better.
And besides, on either tablet it will be down to the quality of the scan as both screens are stunning, so I guess its then down to which eco system you prefer:-)

asus transformer, better than nexus 7 at least. i have both and the transformer is in constant use here.

2 sd slots, extra battery, hdmi, real keyboard. bluetooth, wireless.

My next "tablet" is a kindle paperwhite, the e-ink type. however that isn't perfect to watch full color amiga mags on.

I do have a hp touchpad 32gb from before. a wonderful tablet that had the great webOS which hp dumped right after they paid a ****load to get. But the salvation came in form of android. So it runs android 4.

I got an iPhone 5 the other day, and while i don't intend to read on a 4" screen going back to the tablet after using it really was a drag. I never noticed it before, but the tablet with its 1024×768 screen isn't exactly that sharp compared to todays best ones.

So if I were to buy a tablet now, i would take a look at the nexus 10 with its amazing 300ppi screen. The Asus Transformer Infinity TF700 also has a high res screen AND a detachable keyboard. The forth gen iPad would also be on the list and i would take a peek at the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 - but i'm not that found of amazons android-without-google-play.

Ipad 3 or Ipad 4 :)

Why have cotton when you can have silk

For me iOS is too locked down and restricted and the iPad too expensive. Android 4.2 offers exactly what I want. For others they might prefer iOS and the premium prices, but it's not for me. It comes down to what you prefer at the end of the day. Play around with each OS and see which you like the most and could live with the best in day to day use.

Regarding the Kindle Fire. These are more restrictive then anything else on the market. Locked into Amazon with a very limited range of apps, based on an old customised version of Android, and with no Google Play Store. Too restricted for my liking. If you only intend buying content from Amazon it would it be ideal. Really aimed at existing Kindle e-reader owners looking to upgrade to a device capable of viewing colour magazines, books and video.

You could also look at the recently launched alternative, the Nook. Similar concept to the Kindle Fire.

But if you are unsure then go to a large store like Currys and try them all out next to each other. That is the only way to instantly see the difference in screen quality between them all, and the responsiveness of the OS and hardware. Something I instantly noticed with the Nexus 7 in store when I tested it next to Samsung Tabs and other makes.

I got myself a Medion MD99000 at a nice price.

It's running android 4.0 and has some quite nice specs.
I was baffled when I found out that it is an Ollivetti Olipad 110.

That being said I think it's an awesome Tablet.

I too was thinking of getting a Kindle, but I definately don't regret getting a fullblown tablet, and good thing is that the kindle software also exists for Android so I can read books at night.

This is my next tablet -

Quad core Samsung Exynos processor, quad core gpu, 2GB of RAM and a 10-point multitouch Retina screen. Lovely-jubbly! I've bought from Chinistore before and they've always been great to deal with - they package their products well so they're properly protected on their journey to you.

A 10" tablet at that price with those specifications is fantastic, and would be perfect for viewing PDF's.

I'm in the market too, and I think I'd go with the Nexus 7 or 10

I'm actually also looking at the Sony Xperia S Tab too as its supposed to be nice to hold, its also Playstation certified so will run with some of the extra games from Sony.

But generally the Nexus Pads seem the best generally. not heared of anybody using these that have complaints.

It depends how good your eye sight is to be honest. I have an iPad Mini and find it quite easy and comfortable to read an Amiga magazine PDF on it :)

I got an iPad Mini as IMO the normal iPad is too big and heavy to hold for a long time. The iPad Mini is also considerably cheaper, £269 isn't too much more than most other tablets cost, and it will hold its value well like all Apple stuff.

I hear what you're saying about iOS being locked down, but I have a desktop computer for 'proper' work.

The problem with the iPad Mini is that it's dated technology. It's completely based on the aging iPad 2, right down to the same 1024 x 768 resolution, which for a 7.9" screen is lower than the smaller 7" screens of the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire. I would say it's about the same quality/dpi as an iPhone 3GS.

You can see Apple philosophy in doing that though. So many Apps already exist designed specifically for the iPad 2 spec, so they will all run perfectly on the Mini, without the embarrassing black bars that have plagued the iPhone 5.

The other issue is that if you believe the current rumours, and in traditional Apple style, it is about to be superseded by the Mini 2 as early as next month!

As for price, even the cheapest Mini is still £269. The cheapest Nexus 7 is £159, and even the top spec one is only £199.

Finally we come to the Nexus 10. For just £319 (just £50 more than the iPad Mini) this is a lot of tablet for your money. With a 10" screen sporting a higher resolution than even the iPad 4's retina display. If I were buying a tablet mainly for magazine PDF reading then I would definitely go for the Nexus 10.

Picked up a Sumvision Astro+ 7 a short while back. The screen resolution leaves a little to be desired and its a little slow but it suffices as a cheap e-reader and works great for games and angry birds
5 point multi-touch capacitive screen isn't bad either for the price.

I believe they have discontinued the model I bought and replaced it with a dual core model which should be more responsive. They can be had for a fair bit under 3 figures.

Cheap tablets coming out of China are definitely getting better, thanks to China making most of the chips in all tablets anyway, so they are all off the shelf components. The problem with these cheap Chinese unknown brand tablets is screen quality, build quality, and finally the PCB and other component assembly definitely not up to the same QC as big name brands.

You could argue that for little over 3 figures you are getting quite a lot for your money... and that was true 6 months ago. The Nexus 7 however changed that, as did the Kindle Fire. The cheap Chinese tablets really are not that much cheaper... for much lower specs.
