So, I'm in a situation, where I got a Sega Megadrive but no games and I'm next to oblivious about Megadrive's library.

Everdrive MD or Mega Everdrive is probably in my wishlist in the future but in the meantime, I'd like to get a few titles to get a feel of the Megadrive and what it's capable of.

I'm not a very skilled player so I would prefer something that's not ultra hard. I like simulators, FPS, adventure games and perhaps the occasional platformer.

What would you recommend?

Streets of Rage
Blockout
Mortal Kombat 3 (or Ultimate)
Sonic (as Mike mentions above)
Wrestlemania the Arcade game
WWF Royal Rumble
Street Fighter 2 Special Champion Edition
NBA Jam
Aladdin

To name a few :)

  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Streets of Rage 2
  • Skitchin'
  • Toejam and Earl
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • Zero Wing

Thanks, guys! :) That kind of list begins to make an Everdrive a viable option.

Have to do some research on the games and buy one or two, which appeal the most.

You definitely have to get Sonic as it's the one game responsible for selling most Megadrives, and the source of many arguments with Amiga owners, as MD owners used to say it couldn't be done on the Amiga.

Castle of illusion is at the top of the list
Golden Axe
Revenge of Shinobi
Ghouls and Ghosts

RPG:
Sword of Vermillion

Adventure:
Wonderboy in Monster World

Simulator:
Road Rash I or II
Micro machines ?!

Why Castle of Illusion as MasterSystem version?

The 16-bit Version is perfect, World of Illusion is perfect, too!

Quakeshot the third must have (or must play :) )

i personally enjoyed the (few) rpgs/strategy games on the Sega.

Genghis Khan II
Starflight
Star Control
Might & Magic II
Phantasy Star series.

friend of mine couldn't get enough of P.T.O., tho i never tried it...

Why Castle of Illusion as MasterSystem version?

Really? The Megadrive version seemed sluggish to me, and the presentation wasn't as impressive. The parallax scrolling was always good to see, but I definitely view the Master System version as the better game.

They were alright games on the Megadrive, but it was difficult enough getting that list down.

I'd recommend Story of Thor as an adventure game. Its a bit like Zelda, but more like Streets of Rage and I like the genie type characters that follow you about.

Brilliant

Toy Story
Mortal Kombat 2
Super Street Fighter 2
Desert, Jungle, Urban Strike
Road Rash 2 or 3
Flashback
Revenge of Shinobi
Virtua Racing
Lethal Enforcers
Alien 3

But if I were you I'd just get an everdrive...

The Streets of Rage games are a must (not so much the 3rd one). I also highly recommend Shadowrun, although i personally prefer the Snes version :p.

There are too may great games to list, so an Everdrive is definitely worth buying

No way, Flashback should only be played on the Amiga! ;)

True and I want to throw another Amiga title in here -

Mega Lo Mania

I never played it on Amiga until recently thanks to whdload, as I think it was Kickstart 1.3 only back in the day.

However I lived and breathed the Mega Drive version, nice little god sim.

If you like RPG/strategy games, Shining Force is brilliant.

A second this opinion, i hate RPG games but almost became addicted to SF at one point, it has a brilliant story to it. If you can, give Ghouls and Ghosts a try, it's challenging at times but a game that can be completed. also a fun game that wont tax you is Splatterhouse 2. finally if you fancy a solid shooter try Hellfire.

You mean because of the "Blast Processing"? :D

The SNES gave it a solid go though!

I also preferred Castle of Illusion on the Master System. It's one of the best games on it. It also have you the option to attack the levels at almost any order you liked instead of sequentially as in the MD version.

Other great MS games if you get an Everdrive or an MS converter are:

Master of Darkness (Castevania style awesomeness, loved this as a kid)
Sonics (again, they are very different from the MD versions)
The Ninja
Putt and Putter
Terminator
Prince of Persia
Batman Returns
Kung Fu Kid
Outrun Europa
Forgotten Worlds
Marble Madness
Super Monaco GP
Alex the Kidd (Sega's pre-Sonic mascot)
StarWars
New Zealand Story (Loved this on the MS!)
California Games
Powerstrike
WonderBoy in Monster World
Phantasy Star
WonderBoy The Dragon's Lamp

I like the MegaDrive-version of Castle of Illusion.

This game was the reason, why I bought a MegaDrive and not a SNES. Top grafic, nice animation and 100% jump'n'run. But when I have more time, I will Check the Mastersystem Version.

One I forgot earlier...

MicroMachines 2 or 96

Excellent game to play with mates.
