which Amiga for gaming?

Trying to decide if I want to invest time in making my A500 work to keep or not. It'd be mostly for gaming along with the C128 I use.

Is A500 a decent game machine or should I look for a different one? A600 is another that I had looked at.

I'm interested in Amiga mainly because it had better graphics and more advanced than C64/128 and I wanted to experience playing game sometime before I end up 6 feet under.

The A1200 with a CF card and WHDLoad is a fantastic setup in my book. There are some games that won't run, but you also get AGA compatibility. Just my opinion.

Yep an A1200 is the best 'gaming' Amiga but that said, you can still turn an A500 into a great gaming machine (you just miss out on AGA obviously).

So I'll go ahead and try to get my A500 fixed up (green screen, no RAM expansion) and save up for A1200 eventually. I still have a Supra RAM expansion somewhere that attached to the side of A500 but it was separated and got lost in my garage.

if you get a 1200 for gaming with whdload,you will need extra memory in the trapdoor as well...

if you use a 500 for gaming and whdload the only advantage of owning a 1200 is the aga games,since the 500 had the biggest library as far as that goes.
and most games for the amiga was ocs and ecs anyway...

I would go A500 with a HxC floppy emulator or one of the many other Floppy drive replacements around now they can store tons of classic Amiga 500 games..

You could go for an ACA500 for your A500 but you will find a lot of Games (WHDLoad) need extra Ram as the ACA only has 2mb

If your A500 has 2mb Chip Ram + the ACA500 then you can get 75-80% of ECS/OCS games to work (with a light workbench install)

I have a little extra 2mb Fast Ram clip over CPU which helps for the bigger Games but I now also have an ACA1230 hooked up to the ACA500 with 64mb

The overall winner though as said by the others is the A1200 with 8mb Ram or a better a 1230 Accelerator (Blizzard MkIV comes highy recommended)

I'm finding my A500 with kipper2k 8MB / CF combo is getting a lot of playing time for the "classics" and is mos def a decent budget option, even though the accelerated A1200s and beyond are undoubtedly nicer and snappier especially for demanding apps or a fancier looking Workbench. I am actually considering selling my 1200 once I get a Gotek working because when it comes down to it I'm personally only into playing the classic games and watching a few demos rather than being a power user.

You need to decide which games you want to play - late 80s/early 90s (ECS), or mid 90s (AGA) games. AGA games will only run on an A1200 or A4000, but some older ECS games won't work.

The original A500 is the most compatible with older games, but later AGA games won't run on it.

There is no perfect Amiga for all games.

I dislike the A500 because of its large footprint - simply takes up too much valuable desk space. Apart from that, I love its capabilities and the games
