I don't know... You give them a home, tart them up a bit, given them pressies in the shape of upgrades, and all the reward you get is 'bzzt' followed by a release of magic smoke. Oh, and a burnt finger.

The last 36hours:
Apple IIe platinum: popped my last LS245, popped two 6551s (maybe my fault that one), decided it didn't like my latest Mockingbird update even though my Euro IIe is quite happy. Oh, and the Pi3 inside it has suddenly decided the PSU I made specially for it no-longer has enough juice to supply it properly.
HP Elite book (my main PC): Spat out the middle of it's power connector so I can't charge it up!
Galaxy S6 Edge (yes I was stupid enough to 'upgrade' my HTC Leo): Has thrown a wobbler and no-matter what I do is stuck in a boot-loop (daughter broke said HTC phone)
Monitor PC (usually used by her indoors): Claims it's fairly new SSD is on the Fritz
Daughter's Laptop: Also not wanting to play... And of course she's 'too upset to let me look at it'...?!?

Oh, the humanity!

So my wife is trying to get work done on an android tablet, my daughter isn't in the greatest of moods, and I'm also down to my last device - a PIPO T9 tablet in to which I've shoved my phone's SIM.

At this rate my ever reliable RiscPC will have to once more come out of daily-driver retirement... Oh, Acorn why did you leave the desktop business?

Lots of stuff on order...

Oh I know the feeling and it is usually my fault because I'm getting excited to test whatever computer I'm messing with and get impatient and put something in the wrong way round like the other day with a set of Amiga Kickstart ROM, I've changed them countless times but this time I put one in the wrong way round and 'puff' no workie any more,
I was so angry :tantrum: with myself.

what make it worse is the fact that the things that usually break are the things that are hard to find/replace

this is how i look at retro computers and the hobby in general i consider all my machine's rented including its associated hardware like monitors
they wont last forever

so when they fail, its old age or failed parts nothing personal,i just fix them and carry on and enjoy them for as long as i can

roy_bates, the Zen Master of Amibay! :)

I just wish we were all as good at fixin' as you!

Be more optimistic. They do not hate you. They just express their love to you in a specific way.
They probably want to attract your attention and demand more love from you ;)

To be honest, I've got to the stage where I laugh, almost insanely. Maybe it is sanity.

I had a router the other day (my 1 day off in that week) that took 5 hours to sort out because of it conflicting and restarting itself - giving me a 30 second window in which to login, change a setting, and ... well it restarted itself. I just laughed tbh cos stuff will be a pita just b'cos.

Have you tried jiggling the cable?

(On a serious note, it's a long shot, but maybe the power in the house isn't all it's cracked up to be... or you just have tons of bad luck)

I can relate so much. For whatever reason when i started collecting i thought all my gathered parts would last forever. Then an ATi Rage Fury MAXX died on me and i was faced with futility of our existence. Or at least the simple fact that these things i picked up are simple consumer items that were meant to be used for only a few years at the very best.:)
