Okay, so about 2-3 years ago I came into possession of a Compaq Portable 486c with a cracked/faulty LCD panel. Now, I know these things are rare as hens teeth, but e-gods, why do online part's suppliers like ETI Express, IMPACT Computers, codemicro, memory4less, and so on have this part listed as available if they don't have it in?

I don't understand? Is their infrastructure at their company so old and outdated they can't update parts quantity when stock runs dry? Or are these people just too bloody lazy/buearucratic to get off their patoot and go pull up the panel? C'mon, I know it's old, obscure, and weird, but it beats me blowing the rest of the system up trying to retrofit some newer 10.4" display panel to it. Been looking on E-bay and VCFED for awhile, with no luck.

What's funny is in the case of IMPACT, I talked to them in chat about it, and they said they'd pull the page - well - here it is, almost half a year later, and that dang panel is STILL listed online at a sale price no less? WTF?

Is this a common thing or? It just seems stupid to list a part for sale online, especially since at least 3 of the companies listed have been putting "ON SALE 20% reduction" on theirs for awhile now.

Oh well, put out a Wanted ad here for it to see if anyone else has a line on one of these.

happened a few times to me aswell in recent times with older hardware. The items are listed as available, I ordered it along with other items but put in that all the items will be delivered simaltaneously. After a 2 weeks I mailed the company and requested an update, their reply was that the item was not available anymore and thus they will sent the other items anyway. Long story short I canceled the order for all items and bought everything elsewhere (they started whining about they had to order it and wanted to charge me for them having to order those items, a law suit threat calmed them down). It is my opinion if a company has a item listed as in stock they should be able to deliver, otherwise keep your software in check (espcecially IT companies...)

They all do this, even big component suppliers like Farnell and RS do it. I assume they do it so that you land on their page and buy something else. Try searching for known discontinued ICs and the first page will be Farnell or whatever, but as soon as you click on the link you end up on a page with "Out of stock" or "No longer available".

Bryce.
