From what I have seen this is probably one of the common problems with the top head of the 1571. The top head is mounted on a flexible metal plate and this plate tends to bend (or even worse break), because the head is lifted only on one side when the drive is opened.

These quad density drives can use DD diskettes as cheap alternative, but HD disks are no good and should be avoided.
Any 6581 should do the trick in reviving your breadbin, these R4AR are said to be the best 6581 sid's that were made. The answer to your second question is tricky as answering it could be considered as something that is not allowed on this forum.
Just in case someone finds this thread while troubleshooting this same problem... the problem in my 1581 was a broken logic chip. I've contacted Ray Carlsen asking him to include the information about this issue in his guide and within 24 hours it was.... :thumbsup:

It really is an amazing piece and if you are interested in it, there is no reason for not buying it now as the hardware is the final release!
There is a c64c transition model (ASSY 250466) that does use the 6851, however the more common version of the c64c uses the 8580 and does need modification.
