    Yeah I would use external power, that's an easy change though. the Nano can accept external power, just only has a pin for it not a connector on the board.

    Tapuino, the $20 C64 Tape Emulator Looks great! Have you measured how much current you are drawing from the C64? If it's a lot, might want to consider lowering the LCD backlight brightness, or external power, safer for both devices.

    I connect an Arduino to the C64 user port data pins and USB at the same time. I think a common ground and diodes on the user port pins should be enough safety- leave the C64 Vcc disconnected from the Arduino.
