I would have said that Leopard is slower on a G4 than Tiger on the same machine. Yes, Tiger is virtually abandoned now, along with Leopard and PPC however there is life in the old stuff.

I used to run a 1Gb Crucial card in a PCMCIA adaptor for my Kanga Powerbook. It was my boot disk too. Could it be the make of CF you are using? I know that the spec subtly changes over time and perhaps an older CF might suit you more.
