Back when I had an A1200 I had the best luck with the DKB Cobra '030 with 64Mb RAM. It was most compatible setup I tried. Today I use an A2000 with an old GVP '040 that work well too. You should usually go for the largest, fastest CPU, and most RAM you afford, no matter which model you're using.
I wouldn't use this setup on my computer. Thankfully I have a 1764 PSU in great condition.
I do hope any one considering this idea will check to see which motherboard your C64c has. My C-64c has the same old long board that was used in breadbins. Don't just assume your c has a short board.
Or, you could replace the chip, and chalk it up to lesson learned (the expensive way):

I'll second the idea to check the battery. More good A3000s have been killed by leaking batteries than any other model.
I this area, an A3000 would never be worth what a PS4 would bring, unless it has significant upgrades, and is in like new condition. Many people are afraid of the 3000, because...
Sounds like there's a lot going on over there. Do you have any drag strips, or drag races in your area? I used to race a very modified Triumph 650 cc in our local Drag races (it was 800 cc then). We have both a 1/4 mile and 1/8 mile drag strips in our area. Drag racing is very popular over here.
I agree with you. Jens is apparently thinking about creating a 16Mb REU project that would take of that one aspect of the Chameleon :

I didn't realize it was ending. They never tell us anything here in the 'States....
I start out seriously with a TI99/4A system - it had the expansion box, Memory upgrade, floppy drives (2) Modem (whoppimg 300 baud!) and a printer. When I switched to a C-64, I really wondered if I hadn'r made a mistake (for a while).
