a complete shot in the dark.

ive been unable to find my 25yrs old amiback disks.

I wrote in asm on the c64 and amiga.

i remember on the amiga i used the correct library calls so my code worked on 1.2 , 1.3 , 2.04 and 3.0 amigas no issues.

it was a crappy little intro i wrote but ive lost all my devpack sources etc.

here goes.

i wrote an into to a text adventure called "The Gru"

intro was my music playing with top screen text scroller and copper effect bars with full screen text scoll over a background, I used halfbrite mode for this, (yes i know only ecs and above could see it). I also remember running my code on my A1200/85mbhdd and it still worked no issues.

I programmed this on my 1.3 amiga 500 with GVP 52mb HDD, devpak 3 and if i remember an excellent book that i cant quite remember, something like amiga ref programmers handbook or something similar, it showed me how to call routines in librarys to write a line of text etc and also the hardware points to change screen postion by 8 pixels (smooth scrolling) copper chip and interupt programming as well as programming the blitter to move large amounts of data in binary.

I wasnt that good at ASM as much as i tried i couldnt ever fit music into the floppy boot sector, or draw a 3d object, couldnt get my head around the 9 by 9 by 9 matrix :) etc in asm

so i know my code is lost but does anyone remember an intro to a text game "The Gru" the graphics was black background with 2 menacing eyes just white on black kinda evil looking.

shot in the dark but it might be out there.

i think the text had my address in it, Kidwelly south wales as an advert to try get more coding work (the days before internet)

its been a while now and we have a lot more members so maybe someone has heard of this ?

Long shot this on but have you tried using quarterback tools to search for deleted files on the program disk etc? I used to be lazy in the old days and save projects to the program floppy and then when I ran out of room I the scrambled around for a blank disk to save the project onto. I've been lazily 'recovering' lots of mystical forgotten deleted files off my floppies for some time now!

/sad

I had 2 Amibak sets.

1st was DH0: 2nd was DH1:

I have DH0: and the shortcut to devpak and all my source code and compiled files etc points to DH1: :( Sadly my DH1: backup was lost.

Hi Sardine
any year possible to know so it will better to search for.
Also about the PD text based adventure name:are you sure it was called THE GRU and that it spelled right?
Thanks and hope to find it
PS:About your intRo?
Was it spread all over the workd thru snail mail ? Thru BBS or never went out if your home but been copied to friends etc.
Just asking ...
I see you copy/paste the exact text to another forum(s) so I wonder if it was spread like any software spreaded someone should have cross it since we all watched those endless scrolling....

snail mail to a friend, on or around 1990-1991

he past it to his friend (who asked if an intro to his text game could be made)

it stops there, it might have never been sent to the Public Domain and my code stopped at his house and lost forever, but he spent so much time on his adventure game , he sent me the iff file of his (evil eyes) he wanted on the screen

I know it's called "The Gru" whether i've spelt it correctly I can't remember.

I have my MOD music I made for the intro and the picture below is a bit what it was like.

I know amature but the chap was very happy with it.
