well I've done it , I've bought a cheap 3S printer to play with and to see if i can get the hang of it.

don't know why but I'm fascinated by them...

so case mods and brackets and all that jazz soon

and if i like it i'll get a decent one or upgrade this el cheapo if possible...

High John a reprap thing , only cheap but it will keep me happy

My mate at work has one of these. He prints the SX-64 end caps and the output is very good.

He does say though that its very fiddly to calibrate correctly but its worth it in the end.

I've been trying to get him interested in printing a case for my IDE64 but to no avail, maybe once you're up and running you'd be interested :D

Best or luck to you

I've been interested in 3D printers since they first appeared, but have been waiting for affordable versions with good results and cheap consumables. I would love to see how you get on and some pictures of things you have managed to produce.

If you don't mind me asking, how much was the printer? And how much are the consumables for it? And what sort of speeds does it print? Finally do you have to use their own software to design, of can you use third party software such as cad?

I would love to design small Star Wars figures using one, and maybe my own lego bricks. Lol

I've had a rigidbot 3d printer for over a year now and the thing about them is you need to be good at fixing things to own one as there's a lot that can go wrong but when you have it working it's great being able to create things from images on your computer-It just takes a long time to print stuff.

@Harrison:
The filament is around £16 for a kilo roll that does quite a lot of printing.
My rigidbot takes around 2-4 hours for a small print. When I printed a Judge Dredd helmet that took around 60 hours (I printed it in 4 parts that took around 15 hours each)
Objects can either be downloaded from sites such as thingverse or you can use free software such as 123Design to create your own. Then I use Cura to set up the Gcode (which is the set of instructions that tell the printer how to move and make the desired object)https://www.amibay.com/member.php?246-Harrison

As a devout modder I've been fiending to get my hands on a 3D printer as they make so many things just so easy and open up umpteen vistas.

Fantastic gallery here:

Of what they are capable of in terms of accuracy.

Congratulations on your purchase and happy tinkering.
