Declaring interest for Atari 1040 STE (2Mb) with a 520 STE top case : £60 + pp pending the questions :
1. Shipping costs to Athens Greece ?
2. Which DMA version? the "good" or the "bad"
3. Are you prepared to confirm good packaging for not breaking during shipping?

Declaring interest for the STE, if it's:
- fully working (including all keys on the keyboard)
- has not the "bad" DMA chip

you both might want to read this article

EXTENSIVE DMA testing and the conclusion was not the DMA that was causing the machine not to boot from hard disk but bad voltages repaired with capacitors, STE's and STFM's with "Bad DMA" previsoulsy not booting now booting perfectly off hard disk every time and loading programs.

have a read for yourself.

some quotes
I finally got hold of a new DMA to try in the STFM. As suspected the new DMA does not work in the STFM either. Doing the capacitor mods made the STFM boot right up once again.

In conclusion, it is PCB layout issues causing hard drive problems. Slower TTL devices, along the lines of the 74LS series were simply not fast enough to respond to the PCB noise and worked correctly. Faster TTL devices or even cmos devices can react to the noise and generate bad signals causing problems. In none of my tests with DMA chips did I find any difference. I thus conclude the "Bad DMA chip" is nothing more than a myth.

Hi

thanks for your interest, i will post pictures of the DMA chip tomorrow, i never used any hd with any of these machines..

due to their age i cannot be 100 per cent sure these machines do not have any issue.. but i always kept them in a safe/dry place, so there is good chance they run properly.

i did a quick read/write test with fastcopy III and ram tests using ramtest & gemram : no problem detected so far.

Thank you! Good to know this! :)

@Sardine Thank you for the info. I am aware of the problem and possible solution which in order to try to fix it needs special skills and tools that I do not have.
Interest concerning shipping costs and total cost is cancelled.
Happy sale

Hi All

thread updated with a few pics of the inside of the 520 (1040) STE
it seems to be a true 520 STE with 2Mb memory after all , so i apologize for the confusion, it is seen as a 1040 STE by SysInfo.
the DMA chip (C025913-38 can be concerned by the "bad DMA chip" problem depending on your opinion

i've also added a 1040STF without its top case i found yesterday when putting my atari stuff into storage cartons
it is fitted with a 2Mb mem expansion that is not seen by sysinfo (see pics), price is 30 GBP + PP

pending one last machine, another 1040 STE
will post pictures of the inside as well.

thanks to all for reading
