Before i start trying different network cards / configs just asking incase of a simple fix

Built a dx4 works great. Fast. Hdd fast. Boots win95 in about 15-20 seconds

S3 virge. Sb16 and a realtek 8139d

Unpacking a rar in windows is on par with a dx4 cpu
Copying hdd to hdd is fast. Copying a 15mb file takes a few seconds

Copying a 15mb file from a network share is taking 15 to 20 minutes. Same if unpacked on the fly with winrar. Is the 8139 bogging down the cpu ?? Hdd light flickers now and then so the bottle neck is the network. I’ve tried osr2 ndis and win95a standard but still the same.

i get full speed on every other pc in the house winxp and upto win 11 is around 1 second a blink if an eye for a 15mb file.

Before i go looking for another network card have i missed something ??

No irq conflicts Tried a different pci slot. Is the 8139 meant for Pentium and higher ??

Have you checked to make sure the NIC adaptor is set to 100mbit Full Duplex?

I remember some drivers for Win95 Realtek devices would set it to 10mbps Half-Duplex, which used to cause me issues.

Yes checked and even at 10mbs half duplex it wouldn’t take 15 minutes for a 15mb file

Just about to put in a 3com 3c905b

Stats I'm pulling from searches, it's supposed to be able to do Bus Master/DMA. Maybe a setting related to that?

Right. 3com 3c509b is installed

Copy duke3d 16mb file started at 22minutes. About right been going 3 minutes. Says 21 minutes remaining.

Sigh. I’ll have to test my network storage as its gone up to 41 minutes remaining for a 16mb file.

Think I’ll try win98. Didn’t want to on a 486 but I’ll give it a go
