A different day, a different problem! A couple of years ago I purchased an 8MB Memory expansion for my A1200 and for a while it worked intermittently. Sometimes it would throw up the red screen saying the memory is defective and other times it would strangely work.

However it now seems to have given up the ghost completely. Would any of you guys know if there’s a way of confirming if it’s the actual simm or the board the memory sits in? If it’s the actual simm then I suppose I can purchase two more.

Should I put in the board minus the memory and then see if it throws up a red screen?

Do you mean the Guru Meditation screen or completely red screen? If the latter, the issue is with the ROM. Try pressing down your Kickstart ROM chip gently.

as above.

but its worth mentioning the card your using as well for more advice.
pictures of the card might also help.

It's a red screen and it gives the serial number (or some kind of code) of the memory card and says it's defective. When I remove the card it boots up fine. But to have my dream of a WHDLoad working machine (with windows style selectable games), I'd need this working :)

Here's the card I'm referring to:

try carefully reaseting the gals on the card(the socketed chips)

clean the cards connectors with ipa and the simm edge connector and the amiga expansion port.

steve again bring that with you too tonight and will test in my machine I have a 8mb card in 1 of mine

Went to the 8Bit last night at the Hare and Hounds Kings Heath and I just want to show my appreciation to John M who did Amibay proud last night and troubleshooted the problem with my A1200 and 8MB Card.

In relation to the 8MB card, he identified that the fault was when I put on the plastic trapdoor. This was slightly pushing the memory up against the metal innards...causing it to give the error.
btw, the reason for the red screen is because I amended the colours a few years back hehe.

Cheers John - absolutely fantastic!

no worries again mate also I set the jumpers to give the full 8mb

so shielding needs removing and some protection under the keyboard

That's A age old problem with the trap door I just cut it back and
insulated the cut edge just to be safe..
