Also, I would appreciate any dead board to practice on before starting this project. Doesn't matter if it is beyond repair / broken traces etc. I'm just a newb and want to make sure i'm up to the task with small passive components first.

If you want the practice, go to your local transfer station that takes your trash. They should have a electronic turn in area. You will be able to get what every you want to practice on for free. This is how I did it and saved money to boot!!
