A1222+

Maybe they'll have an announcement at Amiwest this weekend... tbh I stopped following all of the so-called next gen stuff. Too little, too late, too complicated for a consumer to follow.

Interesting on what you have said.

People right now can have Raspberry pi and installed Amiga software(Aberry i think called) in it

Yeah, it's becoming very hard to justify purchasing next-gen Amiga gear when emulation (while not the same) is so so much cheaper. And more and more options for classic gear all the time too. All of the copyright squabbles don't help either.

Some people will understandably buy the 1222+ once it gets released just because it's there. Then the usual Youtube videos will emerge, comparisons and benchmarks posted etc etc.

Personally, I am too long in the tooth to go constantly chasing nextgen Amiga hardware to add to my collection. I like what I already have and see no need to change at this moment in time.

It was such a long time ago I bought the AAA pack which on itself took an age to arrive, I appreciate the pandemic has happened etc but if Apollo can still release new Vampires and we have various new TF cards, etc I'm sure they could've done better!

Sounds like Trevor Dickinson is quite happy to sit on people's money ad infinitum with little to show for it.

Well there is a bit more complexity developing a board with things like memory controllers and PCIE busses compared to Vampire cards IMO. But yes the A1222 is ageing and the delays are problematic. I bought a x5000 board when the pandemic started and once I got over the price for it is what it is I really like it especially the ability to use modern GPU’s accelerated with Enhancer package. Will I buy a A1222 board? Maybe once I see the reviews of the board, it’s final cost, it’s final availability, and it’s final design.

I bought a Sam440EP second hand instead of waiting. But sounds like it is getting a release in 2023. Dont know what I would miss out on not getting the Tabor TBH now that I have the Sam.

I have not really understod the benefits of using a modern GPU in AmigaOS4 (for stuff other than 3D games), will OS4 perform better with one? I mean on my 500Mhz machine WB is performing exceptionally fast already and PPaint works beautifully well.

The reason I backed this by buying the AAA pack was because I still have a lot of software I bought when I had an uA1 and it's be nice to play some of that again and was hoping it would be quite reasonable with the discount. Let's see what happens next year :)

I dont think it will be as cheap as they wanted it to be because of the component shortage. I hope its around 600 euros, would be tempted.

Since these are now available I thought I'd revive this old thread, what are people's thoughts?

I didn't receive my email back in December for the Early adopter scheme but I've chased up and received my quote today, I have to say I'm a little disappointed with the discount but I understand the reasonings given with regards to component shortages, etc.

I used to have a AmigaOne Micro uA1 and did enjoy it so was tempted by this but I think the price point has gotten away from my budget.

Details here:

I gave up on Amiga PPC years ago when it was apparently dead from all the lawsuit and the talent that hit the road never to return. OS4 has had zero improvements in so many years, the only adjustment to it was to run the 1222 and it's rather strange cpu/fpu choices.

The problem in Amiga land is that the OS keeps getting reinvented or new hardware comes out. Most of it is dependant on productivity programs that were abandoned 20 plus years ago. I still use my 3000's to tinker and have fun. But MorphOS is really in a total different place than the rest of Amiga/Amiga like systems.

They made the right decisions at the right time and it has so much developed for it, and I use it as a Daily Driver and it does over 80% of all my work extremely well. It is very modern with many of functions and development is still moving on..

I use:
Hardware:
PowerMac G5 2.5 DC PCIe (I took PowerMac 2.0 and put a 2.5 GHz processor in it) - Technically the 2.7 PCIX System is still faster than most things, but the PCIe systems are newer.
X1900 PPC Radeon
Dual 27 inch displays (one 1080p and the other 4k). Driven from the one dual head video card.
Use a video editing SSD and a 1 gig pcie nic.

Software:
MorphOS 3.18 (3.19 already well on it's way and it has been constantly developed with 30 or 40 releases in the last 20+ years)
Iris
PolyOranizer
Wayfarer
Pagestream
Lots of native OS components that are part of a base install (PDF, Jukebox, jalepeno, etc.)
Some 68k stuff like outline, final writer, and turbo calc. Everything else if pretty much native MorphOS at this point.

You certainly can cheat with wayfarer and containers for Libre Office or other software, even windows :). I just zvnc over to my pc for zoom and other specific things.

Dual monitor is really good, you can click a mui button on the window and it jumps to the other screen, you can mouse over to either one, and screensavers automatically use two displays. I had to use two different video cards and two different screen savers on my 3000.

All the software I listed above has had major updates in the last five years and look to continue going forward. Iris has calendar invites now and is my favorite email program on any platform it just works so sweet, PolyOrganizer has really a great design you can do so much with it because of unique features or features seen on much bigger systems, Pagestream creates professional documents and is due for another MorphOS update this year. Wayfarer is legendary at this point, it's kept on the latest webkit and work beautifully. I watch 1080p and some small 4k for movies. It stays up for weeks without the needing to be rebooted. I use it constantly for work, it is a lot of fun. I actually tried using classic and other Amiga compatibles many years ago for the same purpose, really no competition.

This system is very popular both Chris Edwards and Acill have the identical system I have and will be posting video content sometime on it... You can get them for 100 USD now. So maybe $200 or so all in with a license and your well beyond anything else at any price to get the best updated Amiga experience...

I'm happy to start another post if you want to discuss this further...

Thanks a lot for the details provided.

I have 2 PM G5 units in my another place, I think one of them should be the 2.3 GHz.
Need to give them a chance when more time in summer will come hopefully, haven't checked on them a few years, just having iMac G5 on my desk - but the speed is significantly lower compared to what a PM G5 can offer I guess.

Waiting for the videos and will reach out to you directly over PM in case of questions.
