Hello fellow Amiga peeps

I have finally gotten hold of an A3000 ( the last machine needed for my collection)
Also note to self, need to thank Roux for the a3000

Anyway....

I have a couple of questions.

I need to re-install workbench, however when I turn machine on I get a grey screen with yellow writing saying error finding kickstart 2.x file (or something along those lines)
Simple question, how do I install workbench? do I need a kickstart disk like the a1000? if I buy kickstart roms 3.1 will this avoid needing kickstart disk? can the kickstart disk be installed to hdd so I don't need it? and also anything else I should know?

if I hold the mouse buttons I get a kickstart menu thingy about booting kickstart 1.3/2.x from floppy or hdd, when clicking floppy it askes me about superkickstart disk.

I have workbench disk (3.1 a plenty), what other disks do I need, where can I get them (MODS am not asking about piracy)

congratulations, you have an early A3000!!

You Need so called Superkickstart disks to boot the A3000. Then you kann kick this one with KS 1.3, 2 up to 3.1...

is their anything good/bad about early one?
is there anyway of booting the machine without using a disk?

where can I get the disk from, or is there any google "term" I should search?

if I want KS 3.1 do I use disk and ROM?

My recollection about this is vague... but once you have a superkickstart disk, you can copy the kickstart from it to your hard drive. After that, you won't need the kickstart disk anymore because the boot ROMS will just load the kickstart off your hard drive instead.

I don't know what the legal POV on this would be, but googling for Superkickstart can probably find what you need. Perhaps in TOSEC as well.

Ok thanks

if I buy a KS 3.1 from Amiga kit, will this eliminate the need for kickstart floppy?

I don't think so--you can't use a regular 3.1 kickstart because your A3000 needs a special kickstart with what's called "bonus code" in it. I'm not sure if Amigakit sells those.

edit: wait, if you mean the actual 3.1 ROM chips and replace your current 1.4 ones, yeah that should work?? Can someone confirm--this has always been confusing to me too.

Yes, but may be you need a so called ROM tower...

What is the Revision of the board?

Congrats! On my favorite Amiga...

If you install 3.1 roms you don't need a superkickstart file.

I can't remember but, I don't think you even need the rom tower with 3.1 roms (can't remember for sure though sorry :)...

Good Luck and Best!

i think if you use the 3.1 roms, you can get rid of the rom tower. cant remember exactly, i have 3.1 roms in my A3000.

You don't need the ROM tower if you use 27C220s (afair) on the U182/U183 sockets.

So the 3.1 ROmS will be fine from amigakit?
whats a rom tower?
going to open machine up tonight and see what Rev board it is, I assume though as its an early machine that uses kickstart disk it'll be a 6.x?

The ROM tower is an extra circuit board located between the rom sockets and the kickstart roms. BBOAH has a picture of one: http://bboah.claunia.com/rom_tower.jpg
1.4 kickstart and super kickstart disks where used for a long time, my A3000 has a Rev.9 motherboard and came with the 1.4 kickstart, so just the fact that it has an 1.4 kickstart does not necessarily imply it has an early rev motherboard/daughterboard.
