So I got 2 A4000 and 2 A3630 CPU cards with FPU. I cant get them to run at all.
They should be fine. The A3630 were bought here as new old stock and at least on of the mobos has been recapped just recently.

Im just clueless I suppose. Tried to google settings for a nonCR A4000D with A3630 but all I find is a lot of posts with guesswork and "google it" comments.

Right now I only get a black screen on both machines. Ive decided to pull everything. Ram, floppy, CPU card and IDE cables. Its just the mobo and the power supply at this moment. What should I see? A white or a black screen? What should be the first item I should add?

Could someone please guide me step by step, Im so tired of endless tiral and error.

First check jumpering:

J852: set it at "1M" if you are using 4MB Fast ram SIMMs.You can use a pair of 8MB SIMMs instead of 4x4MB SIMMS but they should go on the ODD from left simm banks:

from left to right: 8MB SIMM- (blank) - 8MB SIMM- (Blank) -(and chip SIMM bank on revB mobos).

Then for 030 (A3630) operation check the jumpers close to the CPU slot:

J100: set it on position 1-2 "internal"
J104: set it on position 1-2 "internal"

Then check:
J151: ROM Speed: set it on 1-2 "200"

Check the Crystals are firmly in place as (at least on rev Bs are socketed)

The same For Kickstarts ROMs.

Beware that the on the 4000 if nothing is connected to the IDE port or if something was changed on the IDE chain it would take ages to start (black video signal)

Check once started that the caps lock key led does not blink alone, the check if it reacts to caps lock key pressing

Board needs cpu+roms+chip ram sim to boot.

CLK 90 Clock SourceJ100 1-2Internal (020/030)2-3External (040)
CPU Clock SourceJ104 1-2Internal2-3External

can take upto 30 seconds to get kickstart screen depending on roms and if there is a floppy/hd connected.

Have the systems worked while you have had them?

battery leakage?

Quite happy to say that I got both boards and CPU board to work. Refitted rom. Populated all sims. Changed J852 jumper & waited out the black screen.

Dont know what it was that fixed it but Im happy!

Now I just need to fix my A3000 aswell.

I will propose that it was the reseating of the ROMS which worked. I had exactly the same issue with one of my A400D Rev B boards and tracked it back to the ROM sockets. A quick clean and refit and the machine came back to life.

Having spoken to other people who have also had the "black screen" problem, this seems to be the root cause.

Anyway - glad its all working :D
