Two things bother me about my A4000's CD-ROM drive - firstly it is quite deep so almost hits the PSU fan inside, and secondly it is quite a dark cream colour so doesn't look great either. So assuming it won't cost much, I'd like to replace it.

Can anybody recommend some CD-ROM drives that are:

1) nice and white (and no decals/branding on the front)
2) isn't too deep
3) will work over IDE with IDEfix97

I tried looking on eBay but 'low profile' only returns half height ones, I need one that's 'shallow' if that is the correct term? Also are there any restrictions with read speed? My current one is a 4x drive.

Add a DVD drive instead your options will be much better. Any drive that uses the atapi standard will work with ide fix, you can put dvd writers in too but not sure if any burning software supports them. I'm using a Pioneer DVR 105 in my A1200.

I have a circa-2004 LITEON dvd writer on my A4000D, which is shallow enough to easily fit and works perfectly with IDEfix97. It used to be extremely popular a few years back - at least in the UK and Spain - and can be scavenged off any pentium-4 class/AMD athlon-xp-class PC of the time. Ebay might have loads of them too.

There's probably countless other alternatives, as Acid said most IDE/atapi drives will work. I've seen some A4000s with DVD/usb-hub memory card readers combos, but these require usb too to function. Good luck!

I don't know if you have anything similar to Craigslist there, but I know here there are piles of used drives up for super cheap on CL all the time. You can always ask how long the drive is if you see a nice one.

I also used a Liteon 52x cdrw in my A4000. Was short enough to leave plenty of room behind and worked perfectly with iDEFix'97.

OK thanks guys I didn't realise a DVD drive would work. I've found quite a lot listed as "IDE/ATA" - will these work? There aren't many IDE/ATAPI ones on eBay.

ATA = ATAPI

ATA Packet Interface (ATAPI) for CD/DVD ROM drives
[Not true for HD's and SSD's of course]

Added bonus is you can then backup Amiga files to DVD instead of CD

/There's MakeCD, it's free now

(not sure if it does DVD's)

Also I will check the make of my DVD drive in my A4000 as it's slim, I don't think it works with MakeCD though.

Oh and you asked me about the dual CF adapter, you certainly wont be able to use both slots and the CD drive unless you have a 4Way IDE device.

If I had your A4000 I would run a SCSI drive (or SCSI-IDE) off the CyberSCSI as your main drive and have a CF/CD as Master/Slave with CF adapter mounted in one of the front slots or at the back for transferring files/backing up.

Thanks Steve I will check that out!

My current CD-ROM is attached to a Zorro Tandem IDE card, so I don't think I'm short of IDE connections if I do want to add a second drive at some point.

Is there CD/DVD burning software for the Amiga? I've never heard of any.
I've never used the Amiga to burn a disk so not sure on that one, but i've put plenty of files on DVD on my pc for use on the Amiga and it reads the whole disk on my Amiga.

MakeCD works just fine. I've burned a couple of CDs from my A1200 with it in the past.
