I installed the 4 extra chips onboard but without the matching capacitors (like the existing chips have below them). Should I add those too? I suppose the holes are there for some reason but on the other hand I haven't had any problems running the system without them.

these are decoupling capacitors. they reduce the noise inherrent on the power rails when you introduce electronic circuirty.

you could add them - they are 0.1uf monolytic capacitors, although I do doubt you need them.

Thanks :)
BTW I took a look at the A500+ 8A board apparently it uses 1 capacitor per 2 chips, although I'm not sure I can use this to reason not installing them on the 6A.

Yes you can, I never bothered installing them either :p

Seriously though, If it aint broke, don't fix it.
If you start experiencing RAM faults or yellow screens then you can start by fitting these caps..

Hello guys,

Can i use 256k rams in the memory upgrade process ?

I have a rev6a A500 i want to upgrade it to 1Mb chip at least.

I got this rams, i read somewhere that the leftover ram will be discarded is it true ? Will this work ?

@bgsjust

Hello there, lets see if I can help.

In regards to the A500, you will need 4 * (256k*4 bits) 20 pin x4256 chips. You shouldn't need the decoupling monolithic capacitors, but if you are experiencing boot failures of green / yellow screens or frequent guru notices then you should probably add them (they are "0.1uF").

Remember you will need to Cut and join JP2 and cut JP7A - (have a read here)

This will yield 512KB of 16bit RAM in an additional two banks on the A500.

Now, on another note, your user name should not be your email address, I would humbly advise that you ask a staff member to change it for something else you want.
