I got an old copy of Sonix 2.0 recently and love the sounds using this with my Amigas but I can't seem to play it with my MIDI keyboard/controller and can't find any MIDI options. Does anyone remember this program and how to use it with a MIDI interface and a real keyboard. It does work just fine playing it on the A1000 keyboard. Is this maybe the only way you can play it? I also have Deluxe Music II and it has MIDI options that are easy to find but doesn't sound nearly as good for what I'm trying to do. Unfortunately, I did not get the manual with it, but it's easy enough except no MIDI support that I can figure out.

I have a copy of Bars and Pipes but I need sounds and I have only 1 external synth to use at the moment. I did find a used book on Amazon called The Key to Aegis Sonix. I have also seen a copy of one called Synthia on eBay but they wanted like $200 for it and that's a bit much for 20 year old used software!

So I found out that Sonix will not allow you play or program it with an external MIDI instrument. You can, however, use Sonix to drive an external keyboard or sound module. Hmmm. oh well, I just have to play Sonix with the Amiga keyboard. I use the A1000 with it's nice stretchy keyboard cord! :) I bought that book and it as a lot of great info about Aegis and talks about the Amiga a lot as well. Cool.

It is possible :-)

It is possible :-)

I know this is an old thread, but it is a little difficult to find information on Sonix on the net, so I will reply anyway
Actually it is possible to play Sonix like a MIDI slave. It accepts note on/off messages on MIDI channel one. I find the latency is quite ok. No pitch bend or modulation though i think.
There seem to be some versions that lack the MIDI support. I think it is important to have the drawer called "Miscellaneous", there seems to be MIDI-related stuff in it.

So the best route is using another MIDI-aware program like Bars&Pipes and OctamedSoundStudio. ;-)

 Do you know the soft synth in Sonix? It has a charm all of its own. ;-)
So here's a question: Would it be possible for an Amiga to run Bars & Pipes and Sonix at the same time and then route the MIDI OUT data from Bars & Pipes to Sonix's MIDI IN (either internally or via cable)?
Another fun thing that is easier for me to do would be do set up my old Atari Mega 2, run a sequencer and enslave the poor Amiga. I wonder how they'd get along (greatly I guess).

You say using PIPE: & AREXX? Yes, totally possible.

One must be a knowledged OS user to do it, but totally feasible.

An Amiga as a slave of that other, erm, "electronic device"?

Sorry for my reaction:

:slap

hehe, that's totally the reaction I had in mind when I was writing that sentence. :p
It is a strange kind of terminology, isn't it?
Wow, I didn't know about that ARexx language, very nice to learn about it!! I would be tempted to try something like that if it wasn't for two things: firstly and mainly I am not a skilled OS user, and secondly my Amiga is a 500 and may not have enough RAM to do that kind of stuff. Even then I could try it with emulation I guess but that wouldn't sound like Paula anyway...

here's a little video: It shows Sonix being played with a MIDI keyboard at the end.

AREXX is a script language used from Workbench 2.0 onwards and is capable of running on plain 68000 CPU.

Of course you must have some more RAM than 1Mb to run the scripts and the two programs at same time. 2Mb of FAST RAM will be enough, 4Mb to be on the safe side.
