In a move that smacks of the draconian Internet laws in place in countries like Australia, the UK government has plans to ask ISPs to block all pornography from home Internet connections by default, it’s reported today. Under the plan, customers would have to ask the ISP for access to pornography.

The Sunday Times reports [paywalled link] that the UK’s largest ISPs will be called to a meeting next month to discuss the idea, which is being presented as a way of stopping children from accessing porn. Quoted in the story, Conservative MP Claire Perry describes the current Internet as the “Wild west”. “We are not coming at this from an anti-porn perspective. We just want to make sure our children aren’t stumbling across things we don’t want them to see.”

The Sunday Times says the government is pushing for this despite the UK’s Internet Services Providers’ Association saying in the past that such a block would be expensive and technically difficult.

Does this sound insane to you? It does to us. While most people probably don’t want children exposed to porn, the idea of blocking it at source is hairbrained on a number of levels:

How do you define porn? Sure, some sites are obviously explicit but what about sites which cover the academic study of pornography? What about message boards like 4chan which cover a wide range of topics including porn? Where is the line?
If you do block sites which cover porn among other subjects, where do you stop? It’s potentially letting Internet censorship in through the back door.
Adults shouldn’t be stigmatised for viewing porn. Forcing them to contact their ISPs for “permission” does that.
No, we’ll take end-users choosing their own child protection measures over a ‘Nanny state’ approach. It’s worth noting that the minister behind this reported plan is Ed Vaizey, who last month made comments that called the future of net neutrality in the UK into question, even if he later claimed to have been misunderstood.

We’ll keep you informed on how this story progresses.

What?! Oww Ghod!

It is insane, but the government are starting to be afraid of the internet, especially after wikileaks. One of the response of the governments of the world will be to turn off the tap slowly, drop by drop until all is left is an empty shell of the internet we know now.

The next thing to go will be net neutrality, i believe. You'll have your choice of flavor of the internet but one flavor only and they'll be controlling the content.

"This is a very serious matter," said Mr Vaizey. "I think it's very important that it's the ISPs that come up with solutions to protect children."

This might sound a bit sodding radical Mr Vaizey but how about the parents of said children come up with solutions to protect their children? Maybe they could keep the computer in the living room where they can see what is going on.

Is he going to ask Ford, GM and other car makers to come up with solutions to stop people aren't old enough from driving from getting in a car? Or ask gun manufacturers to put solutions in place to stop people who aren't entitled to use guns from actually using them?

Why when it comes to the internet do parents apparently just walk away from the situation stating that its not their responsibility?

Won't Someone think of the Children?? How about as a parent you take some <censored> responsibility for your children's activities for once?

[Addendum]

If they want to do something useful, they should direct some of their hot air at the UK airports to defrost the planes, I'm getting a bit bored of constantly hearing how they are snowbound on the news.

The governments of the world still have no real clue about the internet, and many politicians not even close to one about computers in general yet.

Instead of trying to block porn, why not do something actually useful like work out ways to get rid of spam once and for all, or to track and remove the origins of virus creation. Governments are scared of something as global and reaching as the internet that they have no real control over. All governments have something to hide and the population of the world wants more transparency in the world. They want to know the truth behind events, and the internet is the only real technology that can deliver this. Wikileaks has shown it is possible.

The internet is definitely helping greatly in breaking down the barriers between nations. Before the internet how many people from other countries would you have ever contacted? With the internet, even on this site we are sharing opinions and ideas between members from all over the globe. Governments don't like that!

I don't think the control of porn is really about porn. I think it is a tester to see if there is a way to be able to control what can be accessed on the internet from a specific country. If the governments could work out how to achieve this they will have gained control of the internet and could then sensor its content and lock it down. We can't let that happen.

lol, if there was no adult content sites, there would only be about 3 or 4 pages of the internet left!

anyway, we can get around this........."to the cloud!"

Somewhere I read that all these pr0n sites will begin with XXX. and not with WWW. I don't know if that's true. Probably will be a reason for that.

On the other hand, there are thousands of these kind of sites, but again...

That's okay with me, I have other sources, to get my amusement from.

DVD clubs?... "Snuff" movies... :p

i would assume this has less to do with social or moral reasons than the reduced tax revenues over the past 10-15 years from knocking shops.

oh no and to go back to the stash of mags under the bed how they going to legislate against them ....

proxie surfing here we come hehehehehhehe

least I can reach the top shelf still ....

There are always ways around ideas to control and restrict internet access. As Cosmicfrog mentioned, just using a proxy that is based in another country would instantly get around that problem. Are the governments really that naive?

Regarding the .xxx postfix, it was an idea to release this as a domain option so that adult orientated sites could then use this to distance themselves from other types of site, and allow people to more easily choose if they wish to view them or not. However there is no way to force an adult site to register and use a .xxx domain name, so it would be voluntary. I think however that a lot of the industry probably would though as it would make it easier to highlight their content. This solution would also make it very easy to use simple filtering software to instantly block all adult sites. Just disallow everything with a .xxx domain. Simple and problem solved.

Why to governments always have to look for the hardest solution to any problem... using law enforcement and legislation as the first port of call... it just gets people's back up.

It's okay, if these go through I've got no problems with sending you pictures of my willy.

What the hell are you talking about?! Australia HAS no internet censorship! Of any form. Period. :)

I have no idea where you got that odd notion from.

Now, if you are talking about 15+ games, which I assume is where you got mixed up, well thats another matter.

Games like Left 4 Dead 2 had to be modified to secure a release in Australia. The reason for this is Australia was one of the first countries to adopt a Video/Computer Game rating system in the early 90s. Back then the most violent game was something like MOrtal Kombat, so the rating system only went up to M15. Years later, some video games are far more graphic and do not fit into the M15 category. Since we dont (yet, more on that in a minute) have an R18 rating for games, the games must be censored to a degree.

However, there is presently discussion about creating a new R18 rating for gaming to fix this problem so that censoring will not longer be necessary.

...but no internet censorship in this country mate. :)

This is extremely sinister in my eyes.

It's nothing to do with porn at all, that's just a smokescreen to get Daily Mail readers worked up into a frenzy of "someone think of the children!!!!!!!!!!". What this is really about is controlling what people can and can't see on the Internet in a more general fashion, probably re-kindled by the recent Wikileaks scandals, it's not a new idea, the previous government touted the idea several times.

It's also stupidly misinformed and obviously designed by people with a poor understanding of how the Internet actually works. The people who want access to this information will still get it, it'll just limit access to genuine material to genuine people who are not making any attempt to access anything "dodgy".

Who decides what is and what isn't an offensive website?

To be fair this is wikipedia, and I have only skimmed through it, but it could mean something like this:
