The answer maybe lies in producing a combined firewall/router that the user can download a blocked sites list into...

That is still a long winded solution and not one that is perfect because all sites not on the list would still get through.

If all adult content had to use a .xxx domain then all the browser/firewall/software would need to do is stop any content from a .xxx domain loading. Simple solution and problem solved.

But if the government implemented it all it can do is look at some list they or some third party they engage for sites and/or look for keywords in URLs, page text etc... and all those solutions are obviously un-implementable (not sure if that's a real word :) ) and would lead to false-positives all over the place.

How can anyone limit porn sites to using the xxx top level domain? What's to stop me from just going and setting up a porn site on a .co.uk or .com? Those tlds already get misused left, right and centre, .com is supposed to be for American corporate websites (although it is so misused over the years that every one has totally disregarded that). The only way it could work would be to block sites on on "xxx" if they are found to contain "dodgy" stuff afterwards and I believe the saying "shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted" applies here! Not to mention, who decides what is "dodgy".

The idea of stopping children accessing shocking material is a totally sound one and I don't think any one could disagree with that but there is no way of doing it, the very nature of the Internet prohibits it from being possible. All we will end up with is larger bills from ISPs who are forced to spend a fortune on some system that is a failure before it's started and perhaps worse, governments attempting to control what we can and can't access.

Looks like somebody is bullying other nations into compliance with their way of thinking over the internet - gee I wonder who that could be???

The New World Order seems just around the corner now and the USA wants to be the leader of it. President of the USA doesn't seem to be a grand enough title - President of Tte World has a nice ring to it don't you think?

Update: "The Committee of Economy and Finance in Spain's Congress has just stripped the website shut-down provision from the Sustainable Economy Bill." Basically the Spanish have told the USA beaurocrats to go forth and multiply - let's hope other countries do likewise :)

ok say they do ban porn what then ? will it go away ? like the gun laws were sposed to make it harder to do a staurday night job NO it still be there.

So how will they enforce such a law, most laws are socialy acceptable so they don`t really need enforceing this is one of the things govements are very scard of when the population wake up and realise we self police our selfs, Take for example myself Ive been a class A drug user, against the law yes, been caught by the law yes did it change my views or out look on life or even stop me from useing NO

So how they going to know you have broken the law then ?? will it be scare tactics like the TV detector van ...

Life love and politics .... really u got to laff

+5 m8y. My fist is in the Air. ;)

I remember a "Steve Wright in the Afternoon" show back in the Radio1 days. Apparently, a TV Detector van arrived at some blokes house, saying they were checking certain houses for using TV's without a Licence. The bloke asks what makes them think he has a TV with no Licence & the detector men point quickly to the Aerial on the roof. The bloke quickly points to the Milk bottles on his doorstep & says; "Just because I have milk on my doorstep doesn't mean I have a bloody cow in the Garden" & quickly shut the door.

It's off topic but I laugh every time I think about TV detector vans.... :D

Heh, TV detector vans...

I say let them try. Let them throw more money away, which could be used to help a crumbling economy on another 'do good' project that has no clear definitions to an end. Nevermind all the people going unemployed. All the businesses crumbling... No... we must waste hundreds of millions to try to sensor the internet!

I wonder how much they'd actually spend before they realise its as futile as stamping out piracy... Which is illegal and still happens...

A more logical approach if it has to go ahead would be to have people request for their ISPs to block it... rather than have it blocked as default. It would save resources and anyone who cares that much then has the option. Plus nobody would have to phone their ISP and say "Can I watch porn please Mister?"

...The world is becoming much too anal... (No pun intended) and better and better it seems at wasting money...

Is it any wonder were in a recession?
