Re: Almost Dell free home

As arnljot said, for business use Dell are very good. They make some good workstations and servers that are robust, well configured, backed up by good business support and are worth buying.

But for home users their home PCs and laptops all use proprietary design so the cases only fit the Dell motherboards, and the motherboards only fit Dell cases. Plus the ram sockets are different to standard ones (back to front if I remember right) so you have to buy Dell branded ram, and the same for replacement PSUs. Not good if you ever need to upgrade you current system as you won't find a none Dell motherboard to fit, or be able to even upgrade the ram in your current Dell unless you buy it from them directly. Not good.

I have to agree with Harrison's remark RE: the Business sector. Generally, they are absolutely brilliant. Their server solutions are just swapped out when or if they go wrong. You just cant get better service than that.

As a consumer customer/private person, not a business - I once blogged about their customer service on my Radeon 9800 card, and the chief of sales of their Texas office contacted me and sorted it out.

That was after local officials said that they couldn't helps since I didn't complete the automated diagostics tool that is installed on the Dell machine.

Texas guy saw the catch 22 I was in, and cut through the bs and sent me a new card which arrived the very next day.

Cudos to him! (and some to Dell)

I have 2 Dell branded PCs, and I was given one of them free of charge.
The machine is an old Dell Optiplex GX150.

I also have a Dell Poweredge server that I bought off imnogeek.

I reckon we should all club together and post a load moar Dell stuff to Arnljot, just for kicks... can someone please PM me his address?

Keep Britain Tidy - post your old Dell stuff to Arnljot!!

I really liked the GX series. I especially liked the way the case opened to make everything easily accessible. Unfortunately, you had to lay it on its side to get into it.

Oh well,
