Am I missing something (eBay and Commodore 64’s)?

I am really getting a little peaved with eBay of late, I have since the start of the year been trying to purchase a working C64, I have now bought 5, all stated as working, and all for way too much money! 3 were totally dead, black screens, 1 had no SID chip at all, and the final one had a SID but it was duff. All of the units I paid well over <Snip> so have now set an upper limit of £50 as I’m fed up of getting ripped off. Just tried again tonight and lost out on 2 systems, but it looks like there are people trying to get well over <Snip> for a working C64!!! Surely this is taking the P. ? Am I the only person that is having this problem? All I want is a working C64 and to not get ripped off in the process, am I asking too much?

If they're being sold as "Used" (as opposed to "For parts/Not working"), and you haven't already done so, you could get your money back because "Used" requires the item in question to be functional, and as such anything sold "Used" that does not work is "Item not as described".

Dunno if that's helpful, but there you have it.

That said, if you still have all 5 of those, I would be surprised if you weren't able to cobble together a working system out of the dead ones.

All returned and bad feedback left, it’s just the hassle that gets annoying, it seems that they are all blatantly ripping buyers off and that there are not any real working ones out there, well not unless you pay over <Snip> for one!

Thanks for the link to that one for sale, would jump at it, but afraid I just cannot afford it, with the carriage it’s just a bit out of my price range, bugger really as looks perfect...

1. please remove all the discussed prices from your posts we dont allow chat about prices and how much something should be worth

2. I was given a boxed (very yellowed) c64c i powered it on and loaded a game. It seems yo work ok. When im home ill see what i can do for you.

C64's (yes the working ones too) are very common and you shouldn't have much problem locating a decent one for a decent price. Else you're doing something wrong. Random purchases at Ebay from random people who doesn't really know anything about the items they are selling is not a very good idea, unless YOU know what you are buying with all the risks involved. If you'd put up a wanted post on the known forums few months ago (English Amiga Board, A1k.org, Commodore Amiga FB group, and Amibay yours truly) you'd have gotten a working one by now. Possibly even boxed with some accessories. For a price that doesn't break the bank.

Yes, I feel for you. The problem stems from the fact that, until fairly recently, retro computing and gaming was the domain of a relatively few knowledgeable enthusiasts. As such, the rarity or prevalence and demand of hardware and software, and so it's relative value was reasonably well known.

HOWEVER, I have noticed, more so in the past 5-7 years, that more and more non retro enthusiasts are jumping on the bandwagon thinking that Sega Megadrive or, in your case, Commodore 64 sitting in their cupboard is suddenly rare and surely worth a mint since it is a whole 30 years old! They don't seem to understand that the fact that they sold 30 million units coupled with the fact that era hardware is quite robust means that there is an abundance of them in the wild and not just the dusty unit they dragged out of their attic. ;)

The best part is when you try to tell them that a Sega Master System II in it's original (beat up) box is not worth <Snip> I am NOT joking here - a guy was trying to sell a Sega Master System II in box with 6 very common games for <Snip> - not negotiable - on Gumtree a short while ago), they rant and rave about how rare ANYTHING from the 80s and 90s is?!?!?

Personally, I am hoping that retro gaming goes back to being a "misunderstood geek thing" instead of it's present "cool" status - us geeks OWN it. ;)
