Hi Group,

I haven't used my Amiga 1200 in a month or so, so when I tried to install a game on my hard drive I noticed that my Workbench menu's were not available. They were working before. The right mouse click did not activate them. I am using WB 3.0. So, I tried the keyboard method of simultaneously holding down the <Alt> <Amiga> keys and my menus were there. So, I plugged the mouse into another working Amiga and it was fine. I also took that mouse and plugged it into the Amiga 1200 and the menu problem was still there. So I have eliminated the Workbench and the mouse as the issue.

Next I took the unit apart and did a continuity test on the external pins of the mouse port to the soldered connections on the reverse side of the motherboard. Continuity was fine. My question is, what do I try next?

Regards,

Rob

Forgive me if this is something you already thought of.. Checking the cont. from connector to PCB will only tell you that the connector is working. You might have a dry (cold) solder point on one of those pins such that they are not making contact with the traces of the PCB. Try to carefully heat the solder points and re-solder them to make sure they are fully connected to the PCB. If you can follow the traces to another point your probe can attach/touch to, then perform a continuity check that involves the connector through the tracing to make sure the circuit is contiguous into the PCB.

Lastly, using a flashlight try to peer inside the connector to inspect the pins for corrosion. Your probe might be able to make contact, but the place where the pin happens to line up with the mouse's connector might be blocked by corrosion or dirt.

Thanks lucidious. I put it back together temporarily to work on another project. I agree that I will re-solder all the pins to the board and will use de-oxit and steel wool on the pin connector when I get back to it. Both sound like sound advice. Thanks again!

Regards,

Rob
