Hello,

I have an Amiga 1200 PAL with rev 1B motherboard which has a strange power problem when turning on the power.

Typically if I just flip the switch on, the green power led turns on, slightly dimmer than normal, but nothing else happens. No video signal and no sound from the floppy drive. If I pull the connector out while power is still on, put it back first just half way so the dim light starts and then quickly push it all the way in, the power light goes brighter and the system boots up properly. After that it is 100% stable without issues. I don't have any accelerators or additional peripherals attached to this system yet.

If I do a soft reset or flip the power switch off and on, the problem occurs again.

The same symptom occurs with the original PSU as well as with a brand new Ray Carlsen PSU. I sent it to repair and different power connectors were tried out to see if that was a problem, but the problem persists.

Has anybody seen this issue and what could be done to get it fixed?

Thanks, RetroSD

Has the motherboard been Recapped??

No, it hasn't and it has the original caps. Do you think recapping would fix it?

Sounds like the Power Supply needs a recap or MotherBoard.
You should do both if it hasn't been done anyways.

Yes and there are many members on Amibay which maybe able to service the motherboard like bebek tbtorro and I think Retroheaven87 does it too

check out the services part of the forum

Question:

Have you unplugged the CF card and floppy drive and tried that, I'm not saying its a fix but will prove if its a CF card (it can prevent the Amiga booting up) etc..

I have used two different PSUs, one new and one original, and the both behave the same way.

Another problem I noticed is that while trying two different mouses, again one original and one new, the cursor only moves left and right and not up and down at all. I saw posts saying that A2000 has similar issues if the fuse is blown, but A1200 doesn't have any fuses.

I'm going to send it to Maccaps here in the States and hopefully recapping will fix it. Tbtorro is a bit too far away I'm afraid.

Thanks for the advice!

I have tried with CF and floppy drive and without them, just a bare board and no difference in behavior. I have also tried ROM versions 3.0 and 3.1 with same results.

I think acill Also does it in the US

Unfortunately Acill wasn't able to help with this one. He had the board a while back, but the power problem was apparently too much to deal with. Luckily I found a new A1200 which works great, but it would be nice to get the second one properly up and running too. I was thinking about sending the board to http://www.maccaps.com. Does anybody have any experience with him?
