Hello everyone!

I've looked on eBay and a few other places but haven't been able to find this information.

From everything I've seen on the site, the Picasso IV seems to be the best and most wanted graphics adapter for the Amiga 4000. I was just wondering, what are the alternatives and do any of them do the scan doubling/flicker fixing that is necessary for use with modern day monitors? I'm sure I'll probably end up waiting for Indivision to come out with a model for the 4000 but I was hoping to get as much information as I could in the meantime.

Also, what can I expect to spend on each of these solutions? I've seen in the past that average prices were removed from public posts so please PM averages to me.

Thanks!

Heather

Re: Amiga 4000 Graphics Cards

ok, here is a list of my personal quality favs:

1. PicassoIV , a complete solution
2. Cybervision64 (NOT 64/3D) + Arxon videoslot sd
3. PiccoloSD64 + Arxon videoslot sd

the arxon/compserv sd is a full 24bit sd and somewhat easy to find.

anything less than the above just compromises speed/quality .

Re: Amiga 4000 Graphics Cards

In fact, any video slot scandoubler is good (and the Arxon is excellent).

There was a plethora of RTG graphics cards available for the Amiga, back in the way. And the very best is the Picasso IV.

Just check The Big Book of Amiga Hardware for that matter (RTG video boards).

Re: Amiga 4000 Graphics Cards

You could also consider getting a Mediator and a cheap(ish) PCI video card. Considering recent fleabay prices of the Picasso IV you will probably end up cheaper anyway...

Re: Amiga 4000 Graphics Cards

but with mediator you cannot have a videoslot and you cannot automatically switch between aga/rtg...
and not all videoslot scandoublers are fully 24bit AGA, the only ones are:
  • the Arxon/Compserv scandoubler
    the AGA FlickerFixer Scandoubler II
    the Petsoff DblScan 4000
and finally the picassoIV integrated one.

and ofcourse the upcoming Indivision4000 one ...

Re: Amiga 4000 Graphics Cards

Well, I just received my Amiga 4000D from tone007 and am super excited to get playing with it. Thanks to everyone who provided information on this topic. Unfortunately, from what I can find on eBay and the Elbox site and other places, it looks like upgrading the video on this machine is going to be prohibitively expensive. The Mediator alone costs $300.

It is too bad too. I was really hoping to use this machine for more than just playing old games.

Thanks again everyone!

Re: Amiga 4000 Graphics Cards

If you wait around for the Indivision which should hopefully be forthcoming, you can do 1024x768 modes (and higher for widescreen, I believe) fairly affordably. I find it usable (even with the lower color modes you're generally stuck with for speed) for basic web browsing on my 1200.

Re: Amiga 4000 Graphics Cards

CFI was supposed to have got the money to me for my Mediator today (originally listed in wanted hardware) so if that falls through we may be able to come to 'some' sort of arrangement. ;)

Re: Amiga 4000 Graphics Cards

I'm not in a huge need of a new video adapter at this point because I pre-ordered an Indivision 4000. I would be interested in a Mediator but I have the A4000 Desktop model; not the tower. The Mediator would be great for adding on a network card and other devices though.

Take care,

Heather

Re: Amiga 4000 Graphics Cards

And that is the exact point in getting a MediTator inside your Amiga!

Cheap as chips network, sound and TV cards, plus the mighty (sic) Voodoo.

As for switching AGA modes, all needed is a TV capture card, the Voodoo and more information...
