I’m parting with my A4000 PPC, hoping it will find a good home. I’m a bit reluctant to let it go, but i haven’t had time to use it in recent years as i used to. The last time i turned it on was about 6-7 years ago.
It’s an Amiga 4000 revision D (quite rare), so there are no issues with leaking batteries. It is equipped with a Power PC accelerator card (060 on the 68k side and 604e on the PPC side), a Cybervision PPC, an Algor USB card, and a Norway Ethernet module (you've just to find a DB9 / RJ45 adapter for this module which should be easy on Amazon or eBay, i lost mine during a move). It has been overclocked, which is why the 060 appears at 60 MHz and the 604 at 233 MHz on WhichAmiga (if i remember correctly, it’s supposed to be 50 MHz for the 68k and 200 MHz for the PPC).
As you can see from pictures the motherboard has Kickstart 3.1 and Buster 11. The Cyberstorm PPC has 128 MB (60 ns).
I was able to test it again recently (today and yesterday), and aside from a mouse pointer jitter issue with an Amiga mouse (i usually use a USB mouse, which works perfectly), everything seems to be functioning fine. The Power PC works, as does the Cybervision. I had no problems reading from and writing to a FAT32-formatted USB drive with the USB card, and my regular USB mouse worked well (please note with these cards for Amiga classic it may take almost 1 minute before the USB key is mounted).
Like the previous owner, i tend to remove the case cover when using it because the Cyberstorm + Cybervision combo generates a lot of heat. Ideally, the heatsinks should be replaced with more efficient ones, and thermal paste should be applied to the PPC (originally, there’s no thermal paste between the processor and the heatsink on these cards).
I remember some years ago i was able to use the 060 for more than 8 hours a day, but when playing Wipeout 2097 which used 100% both PPC and Cybervision it sometimes hanged after a 4-5 minutes of play due to heat and the boards were quite hot. It can be solved as i said previously but i didn't have the hardware skills. The Phase 5 voxel demo (Comanche style) which use PPC may be less intensive as it can run during a long time without hanging the system at all.
Both the motherboard and the Cyberstorm PPC were recapped by the talented Hivernaal (10 years ago if i remember well).
The Zorro 3 board (in which is plugged the Algor board) is not screwed, in order to avoid it being "sticked" to the Cybervision because of the heat.
Please not that on some pictures white may appear more yellowed than it really is, because of the camera flash.
When i bought it, it has a CD-Rom but i removed it because it was not necessary as i have an USB card which allow me to mount ISO on USB keys, and it allowed better cooling. I let the Floppy Disk Drive but it was not useful to me for same reason, so it is untested (altough the previous owner told me it was working flawlessly).
There is a card reader on front of the box, but i never used it, so it is not connected to the Algor card (it might be possible to do it i think).
I’m keeping the mice (I don’t have many), keyboard and the compact flash card (as it contains personal data), but everything else is included in the lot, namely:
-Amiga 4000 revision D with buster 11 and Kickstart 3.1
-Cyberstorm PPC (060 and 604)
-Cybervision PPC
-Algor USB card
-Norway Ethernet card
-Flash card reader
Oh, and I almost forgot, at startup, the Algor card plays a Turrican-inspired animation (on the CRT output); it can be disabled, but personally, i liked it.
I’m selling the whole set for €2850, which is about the current price of the Cyberstorm PPC card alone, so it’s as if the rest is free. I just want it to end up in good hands, and i hope the future owner will take care of it.
if you don't know well this kind of hardware i prefer you don't buy as it is fragile, quite old and not easy to install/configure, it is sold as is (no returns / refund even partial). If you need more pictures or information don't hesitate to ask.
Shipping fees are extra; the computer will be sent in a very sturdy box (to be purchased) and the cards in another sturdy box, both wrapped in several layers of bubble wrap (will send pictures of the packages before sending). Payment by bank transfer or Wise only.
