Hi guys,

Hoping someone here can help me figure out what I'm doing wrong:

As a test before doing it on my A600 install, I downloaded AMOS Pro at http://www.back2roots.org/Tools/Dev/ (the bottom).

It did a lovely HD install in WinUAE. I then went on and got the compiler .adf's at the same location as above and tried installing that. However, I have a no-go there.

Inserting the compiler disc, it seems to only install on AMOS 1.3. So one would assume the Update button on the compiler disc (which says AMOS 1.3 update) would update AMOS, and then let you install the compiler. Well, when I do that, the installer asks for the AMOS PRO system disc. I've tried inserting each of the 6 .adf discs that was used to install to HD, yet none are seen as the system disc. So, I am unable to update or install the compiler.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

I think you might need the AMOS PRO Compiler...?

Thanks Peter. I wasn't sure if that was the right compiler. However, where do I get the AMOS Pro compiler from then since I seem to be struggling to get it off BTTR and other google searches yielding no results of use..

Thanks to a suggestion by Peter, I looked on the EAB file server for the AMOS discs. Turns out I didn't even have the right discs. Someone should update that bloody Wikipedia site

Anyway, long story short. Install AMOS Pro V1 (still in WinUAE). Then installed AMOS Pro V2. Then I installed the compiler which requires V2 of Amos Pro. Finally, after some compiler setup tweaking, I used an example amos game, compiled it, and it all worked!!!

The compiled game, as a bonus, also ran twice the speed. This is great news.

Thanks to all for the help. Now I can install it for real on my A600 and hopefully figure out the rest as I go (such as how to get tiles and sprites and bobs into AMOS from an external file)

Fun times ahead.

The compiled game doesn't gain twice the speed though. But it compiles your AMOS Basic listing to assembly, thus you can gain a speed of around 30-50% if I recall correctly.

Yeah Phantom. Regardless, I'm happy for the speed gain, as well as the fact it all works. About to install it on the A600 for real...

Don't forget to check out the AMOS Factory Website as well as they have some interesting downloads like TOME etc... there is also some good documentation on there.

Good Luck with your AMOS projects!

Funny you should mention AMOS factory, Peter.

I am unable to register.. I don't understand what answer they're looking for in "What does PPC stand for in Computer terms?:" I've tried a variety of things but have yet to give the right one.. http://www.acronymfinder.com/PPC.html

I gave up after 10 tries...

Performance Optimization With Enhanced RISC – Performance Computing or PowerPC or PPC. :p

Omg. I think they should randomize the question on there or make it a tad easier. The middle one got me in.

I try register there but give up as I didn't know what PPC Stand until Phantom told the answer:D

Well, what a bloody mission that was..
After over 7 hours of pulling hair and nail out, I got AMOS Pro v2 and compiler installed, tested and working on my A600.

After trying 10 floppy discs, 2 floppy drives, and almost smashing things, a mate told me to try something I didn't even think of in the past (I wasn't aware you could do this)..
Assign df0: dismount
Assign df0: ff0: (FMSSys is installed on my amiga).
I did this with all 6 adf images and fooled AMOS into installing properly.
Hooray for assigns..

Now I can finally get to the fun bit of pulling my hair and nails out with making a game... no, wait.. that's not right...

Hi, I was wondering if you ever got anywhere in your AMOS Pro experimenting? I used to spend endless hours staring at a cheap 14" TV, writing AMOS Pro code.

Now I spend minutes staring at my LCD, lamenting the fact that I can no longer spend hours writing code because I've got other responsibilities

Hi HonestFlames. I've actually just acquired an A4000 for development purposes but have been helping a mate work on a Sam Coupé game until now. However, we're both looking into doing some possible Amiga Game dev now and that will give me the AMOS Pro coding bug again soon I'm sure.

I will update this forum with my progress as things come along
