Does anyone have or has anyone had a Memotech MTX500/512 or RS128. I've read about it from my old computer mags and on paper it looks pretty good. Is it worth getting?

I have a original MTX512 which I got in 1984.
Nice capable machine with strong Basic Interpreter with built in assembler and machine code monitor.
Also powered by the TMS9929a VDP, if you have an MSX machine already then an MTX will not have anything new to offer you sadly.

TC

Well, I do have specimens of both MSX1 and MSX2. I do like the design of the Memotech, though, with the aluminum casing and its expandability. However I'm afraid that the aluminum case makes it pretty heavy and therefore the postage at least from the UK would be a killer.

How does Memotech fare compared to a BBC Micro?

You Bugger, you are trying to wind me up

THe Memotech came after the Beeb so it has taken on some of the OS capabilities that Acorn set down in 1981 just like Amstrad did with the CPC range....

The Sound Chip is the Same Texas chip on both machines...

One is 6502 & the other is Z80

So they really are very different beasts, The MTX offered superb expandability but i think this hardware is very hard to find as it was never produced in huge quantities....

I like them both, always had a soft spot for the TMS9929A VDP, amazing chip, and I get upset by people who claim the MSX2 is the same capability as the MSX1 just extra RAM, because MSX2 uses the TMS's successor & that extra 192K RAM is all VIDEO RAM,,,,, 512 Colours oh yes......

I like them both but The Beeb is easier to hack, tweak & expand....

TC :D

The Memotech MTX512 (along with the FDX unit) was also used* for creating Kelly LeBrock in the film 'Weird Science'. So if you're after a new woman then it's the computer to have.

*alongside some Cray computers which they hacked into for extra processing powa! Based on a true story.

Thanks for the info TC! :) Maybe I'll look into getting a BBC, when my financial situation improves.
