I am using Windows 10 at the moment but thinking of Downgrading to Windows 8.1

Are you downgrading windows and if yes then Why?

Your upgrading if you go back to 8 or 7

At the moment it is a horrid os.

I never went further than 7 and will never do (will fight with all my power).

I moved to Windows 10 as part of my recovery from a very serious crash on my i7 laptop.

Windows 7 had a serious issue with Windows Update which I could not resolve.

The issue is described here. http://www.wintips.org/how-to-fix-svchost-exe-netsvcs-memory-leak-or-high-cpu-usage-problems/

I tried all possible solutions and nothing fixed it. Since I didn't want to pay for a Windows 8/8.1 license moving to Windows 10 was pretty much the only solution and it was free.

Considering the reason for the upgrade, it is not likely at all that I will move back to Win7 but I did download Classic shell and Win7 games for WinX.

I had installed Windows 10 on all machines in my home but have put Windows 7 back on all but the home theater system. I disabled the vast amount of spy components on that machine.

10 is just spyware ,I`ve tried it but went back to good old faithful 8, its going to be hard to beat 8 IMO

I just don't get the whole tiles thing in 8/10
It looks like a child's toy

and the start menu with Windows 10, just as bad, you click it and are presented with random tiles that I have no interest in
what happened to start-programs-accessories-paint

I guess it's because so many are moving to tablets, I think you can roll it back to a more desktop oriented appearance though I confess I've still not used it!

I am a stubborn upgrader and I still have to run a lot of my preferred '98 / XP software in VWWare

Running Windows 10 on all PCs at home and upgrading all in the company to Windows 10.

I'm running Windows 10 on my Alienware gaming laptop and couldn't be happier. It's smooth, and runs much better compared to 8 or 7. I have no issues whatsoever. The ugly tiles start menu can be replaced by free apps that give you the same experience as 7 or 8, so that's not really an excuse to downgrade. The whole spyware argument is also mute because you are dealing with Microsoft which had backdoors etc in their OSes for ages... On my other laptops and desktops (work etc) I'm running different Linux distributions.

upgraded all my pc's to windows 10, no issues except 1

my scan 3xs i7 gaming laptop runs great (boots in under 5 seconds), I have an issue where windows just pauses randomly. (not frozen), whatever apps are open respond ok, i can browse my harddisks, windows in not frozen or locked up. any web browsers open i can still scroll the page but if i click any link or open a webpage i get the rotating circle and after a few seconds (web page not responding close or wait), if i open any apps nothing happens, if i press "ctrl alt delete" nothing happens, the pc can stay like this up to 2 minutes then everything i pressed or clicked on earlier now opens, all the apps i clicked on open and because i pressed "ctrl alt delete" the task manager appears.

this also sometimes happens at boot time, i get a black screen for 1-2 minutes or if it happens at logon im looking at my login name for 1 - 2 minutes.

it happens once or twice a day and the event viewer errors coincide with windows trying to check its authenticated status.

i formatted the pc and re-installed and it was great again until a few days later after some windows updates its started again. i have no idea what update is causing it or why as it seems no one else is having this issue.

but the benefits of windows 10 for me outweighs the pausing issue.

i thought i resolved this after a re-install but it came back with an update

Ok

On Windows 10 have search bar on task bar(if you put it on) then you type notepad and should come up

And that there is my problem

too much clicking and messing abouy, having to swap from keyboard to mouse

previously
windows key->r->notepad
or
start->programs->accessories->notepad

now
go back to desktop, click search bar type notepad

it all seems a bit long winded

why can't all those tiles that pop up when you press the start button in win10 actually be for apps that are useful rather than links to games and crap on the App Store, that aren't even installed

ive no doubt that win 10 is a stable OS it's just so clunky and full of junk I just don't need

id rather pay the £££ for the OS rather than it seeming like a bill board for adverts that I don't need

rant done

Just install classic start menu (it's free : www.classicshell.net) to replace the confusing Windows 10 tile start menu.

Once replaced go to start - Programs - accessories - notepad , just like you did on Windows 8, 7, etc... or make a start menu shortcut.

Most people here a capable of performing really complex stuff on the Amiga workbench, so it surprises me that they would have an issue with opening notepad on Windows 10...

In truth I use macs and only very rarely use Windows in virtual machines, but for me the downward quality of Windows has kept me from using a normal PC in some time

and in fareness workbench is a much cleaner OS

maybe Microsoft should do what apple did, and replace there back end of there OS, with workbench

I think the problem here is that you are used to a Mac and not Windows as a daily driver... If you ask me how to open an app on a Mac I wouldn't have a clue because I never use Apple products. That doesn't mean their OS is crap, it just means I never took the time to get familiar with it.

People have been using Windows for a long time, and they are really used to the way it works. Now that Microsoft changed the start menu a bit to modernize it people freak out. I don't think that is fair. Take your time, and if you don't like something you can probably change it by installing free 3th party apps.

I'm still running XP myself, but I've helped quite a number of clients roll back to 7 or 8 - usually because the idiot upgrader screws up their printer setup ("no, no, you want to be using this driver! Never mind that it breaks over our own Terminal Services connections!") or just because they feel like they got tricked or strong-armed by the sneaky tactics MS has been using to get people to upgrade...
