Hi all,

I'm trying to talk myself into / out of buying a Sharp X68000....!

Has anyone on here got or had one of these interesting machines? I'd love to hear some first-hand experience, and see some photos of peoples' setups. Having looked through the stuff on-line about these computers it seems like the X68000 Super or XVI are the ones to source.

Are X68000s easy enough to set up? Easy or difficult to modify for European use? Suffer caps problems like some amigas? Easy to find software and add-on hardware for?

Thanks! :thumbsup::)

I was close to getting one years ago on ebay from France . R Type is Hard X68000 Game!

I don't have one, but from what I gathered (have shortly considered one too, but got it out of my head :) ), the PSUs are the weakest part of these things. And you best source them from Yahoo Japan IIRC.

I bought one a few years ago great machine but its mostly arcade conversions very few original titles, decided to move it on as the PSUs have a high failure rate and are difficult to repair/replace and they were not worth much non working.

I've had a few of these in for repair and New PSU conversions and I'm quite impressed with the Game Quality.....
Very Nice indeed

:)

"If" I did ever get my hands on one then you can be assured that it would be coming your way for a "once over", as standard :)

It's emulated pretty well so I'd give it a good long look, go through some of the library before deciding. It's going to cost you an arm and a leg to buy all the kit and games!

And that's what's stopped me buying one so far. turnkey systems in Europe are scarce, so buying from japan via something like buyee is the most likley only way, and that's somewhat hazardous!

There was a nice one (Super HD, plus keyboard and mouse) that finished today which tempted me, but it would have been bunce++ to have shipped to the UK!

Retro Mancave and Kim Justice are reminding me again of the X68000 :/ I have been tempted buying one ever since I learned about its existence (about 5 years ago only). But I have now tried to talk myself completely out of buying one :) The hassle, money and game catalogue mostly consisting of shooters/action/platformers rationally are motivation enough to not buy one :) I just ordered a nicely looking Sharp X68000 Raspberry Pi case instead :) https://www.beep-shop.com/blog/10188/

Yes, They are maybe cool but it all in Japanase text when you turn on sharp x68000 computer or can you change in English text in boot up menu?
Some Games is very expensive thought!

Get one with SCSI interface rather than an original with SASI, get a RAM Upgrade, use a HDD image and it's easy to navigate using LHES if you're just interested in gaming. It's my favourite machine to use. Just waiting for Bas to modify my SASI to SCSI when he has time on my original and have a compact XVIII in the mean time but I love the original twin-tower look. Also if you're going to do it get a MIDI and MT-32 and SC-55 and you're laughing. Only thing I'd love it an original monitor as the framemeister/XPC-4 on a modern monitor takes a bit away IMO

There exists a Master Disk translated to english, so you can setup the machine, I don't know japanese (well, maybe 5%) and I can use it no problem. As for the games, you could download some and get to know them, and once you have your favorites, buy only those. Yes, they are expensive but all are big (and I mean BIG) boxed and so beautiful, 100% japanese old-school quality. It's worth it.

I sell adapters, converters and also disks for these machines, if you need anything, not just buy, but help for setup and choose what to buy, feel free to PM me!

I'm jealous. I only have emulation.

oooh if an english master disk exists - if you dont mind me asking - what exact terms should I google for? i've just searched "sharp z6800 english master disk" and come up with zero. i dont noeed a real copy sorry.

BTW I agree totally with what sir beaker just said, seeing and hearing his X68000 and with an MT-32 was fantastically good. Joyful.

an X68000 pi case!

thanks for that link.

:)!

Finding games for the platform is easy. But is there a HDD image (hdf extension as well I belief) that has a ready SX-Windows (or that other GUI OS) setup with many applications installed to try (in emulation)? Thx!
