Anyone still running original 360s or PS3s?

heating and coolling down process cracks the ball joints in the solder on the cpu and gpu.

I believe it was the whole move away from lead in solder at the same time these new consoles launched. These early consoles came online with new manufacturing techniques with lead free solder. It seems the CPU and GPUs separated from the motherboard from heat cracking the joints, so we got YLOD and RROD.

There are a few very knowledgeable people on Amibay who can give fuller details.

Right, I seem to recall some Macbooks and graphics cards also had problems in that era!

I remember at my old workplace two Macbooks stopped displaying during the same year, and I had an nVidia 7600 die on me, maybe that was some other issue though. But I think there were a few products here and there that screwed up thanks to the new materials and manufacturing methods.

All these new environment directives messing things up! :coffee:

basicly its because the lead has got more give in it than the lead free solder.

the heating a cooling from expansion and contraction puts a strain on the joints over time.
a bit like bending a spoon handle, after a while it snaps at the weakspot.

Yep still got my good old 120GB XBOX Elite, had it for years and still have about 50GB free. Actually I've been saving all of my games to the cloud recently so it will probably always keep that 50GB free now

If it ever dies, I'll replace it with a either a Dreamcast, CD32 or some cheap and nasty Android console

That's the retro spirit!

Does an early 80gig count? ish... My 60gig 360 from 2007(?) era gave up the ghost about 2.5 years ago

I still have my release day 360 and the actual power pack died before any of this red eye thing but I will tell you there were 2 incidents where I got these circles of death and I simply turned the machine off and tried the next day... all good, escaped twice LOL

I have ended up with quite an extensive collection of HDDVDs even ones not sold in the southern zones and about 6 HD Drives (a consequence of buying collections of HDDVDs) and have yet to buy 1 BluRay - not sure what will happen with that outlook once I get a XBox 1 - something tells me I still won't... I'll stick to DVDs... movies like everything else in this world are overrated, it's just a part of the big picture ;-)

My launch day xbox 360 died to rrod in 2008. may it rest in peace.

My launch day ps3 is still going strong, only thing I´ve done to it is I have changed the hard drive, it has ran with a vertex 2 120GB SSD ever since the release of Gran Turismo 5.

Do you notice a difference with the SSD?

My Xbox 360 20 GB Premium bought in January 2006 and my PS3 40GB Phat bought in Christmas 2007 are still going strong. Both have 250GB drives in them nowadays althought the Xbox only "sees" 120 GB. Still plenty for me though.

Still have my fat 40 gig PS3 from 2007, working fine until relatively recently. The blueray has stopped reading disks, either due to dirty lens or laser dying. Will replace the drive when I can spare the cash. Other than that it has been flawless since day 1, only thing I have done is replace the HDD with a 500GB unit.

just replace the laser if you can, dont try to replaced the whole drive the controller board is locked to the unit(save yourself the hassle/expense of finding out it wont work if you replace the whole drive with board)

get yourself a dvd drive cleaner disk with brushes on it,if it dont work after that replace the laser.

got an original 360 elite 120gb failed just after a year but msoft covered it under there 3 year 3 red rings policy and replaced the board that was about 2 years ago, been going fine since. and got ps3 slim was 250gb but now 500gb as hd failed just after a year, that gets hammered and its been fine, well especially getting hammered now the last of us is out lol

My 2 xbox 360's from launch died a horrible death even after being replaced numerous times. So not got them anymore.

My 60gb ps3 from launch died a horrible death and sony wanted £200 to swap the motherboard out on it....:picard

My Launch Wii and 20gb ps3 are still fine though, along with every other console I've bought in the past.

i still have my original fat ps3, the one with full hardware backward compatability to the older PS games, works like a charm, and has less than 20 hours on it. my original 360 just died on the last fw update with RROD, i'm sure MS do it deliberately to remove the older boxes from circulation

it is weird how we have different expiriences with the same machines:)

my PS3 died 3 times before i gave up

i had 3 Wii's that all died

my 2 original 360s are still going to this day:lol:

when i did have a 360 it was given to me in bits in a box,it had died from rrod.

after i fixed it,it never went wrong in the six years i had it,ive heard from the person i gave it to and it still works.
