Hi everyone,

Two days ago my main PC stopped booting. Everything gets power, disks, optical drives spin etc, but no POST and no display on the monitor. The motherboard is per the thread title. On this board is a small LCD screen which echoes the boot up steps. My LCD displays CPU INIT and then CODE INIT which apparently is a common fault on these mobos. If I remove all the memory modules the LCD will display only CPU INIT.

Trawling the net has come up with various ways of adding memory, clearing BIOS and so on, I think I have tried all of the steps other people have mentioned on various forums but no joy. I have also tried another known working CPU (I'm writing this thread with it in another PC).

It seems to me like I could have a corrupt BIOS chip. Winbond W39V080APZ

Before I send off for another BIOS chip I was wondering if anyone can tell me if I can manually clear this chip by applying a small voltage across pins? How is this normally achieved in electronic terms? I have removed the chip from the motherboard. Any other suggestions would be appreciated, except to buy another mobo .:)

Thanks,
Ed.

If it's the chip, I can look through my BIOS chips collection and send you one for the cost of postage provided I have one that's compatible...

Hi Half-Saint, that's very kind of you. I might take up your offer if I am unable to find a way to clear the chip.

Regards,
Ed.

You sure its the motherboard and not the graphics card?

Personally if I had a working PC with compatible components I would be testing everything, 1 part at a time in the working system to rule it out. Never known a BIOS chip to just die between reboots without some kind of interference.

Yeah I'm sure it's not the graphics card, the LCD POST screen displays the same if the graphics card is removed. Just to clarify, the LCD screen is just a small character display that plugs directly into the MB.

Hiya,

I managed to find a guy online who provides replacement ROMS preprogrammed. I decided to add a PLCC socket for the new chip. If anyone ever needs a new BIOS chip here's the link to his web site http://www.biosflash.com I'm very happy that I managed to get my dead (expensive) motherboard working again.

Cheers all.
