Can anyone over the pond (Australia, New Zealand etc) can share experiences for the new(ish) ecommerce import tax rules? I see more and more that for example at Ebay Australian buyers place some kind of ID's in the shipping address that has something to do with VAT being paid directly from Ebay to the tax office. I was just wondering if these rules will apply to private/hobby small parcels too in the future? Did any of you seen letters with parts being intercepted by customs recently?

I haven't noticed any difference for parcels outside ebay or other major sellers. I've had loads of items from aliexpress and other random places around the globe arrive with no problems so far.

The only thing customs opened of mine recently was from the Philipines, and that had a note stating it was do to with a quarantine check and nothing to do with collecting taxes.

I did some more research on this and the new global VAT rules are in effect from July 1.st 2021. There will be local VAT on everything coming from overseas. Plus a juicy "handling fee" probably from postal services so game over for small cheap parcels from China..

Not a huge deal so far. Some sellers add 10% but not all and in the past few years I have had a package opened by customs once (they add a small card saying "inspected by customs"). As you say it will probably get worse.
