If you're able to do very basic soldering / can get an EPROM programmed, you can solder a 99p Arduino Micro SD card reader, to a ribbon cable to connect to the user port.
There is a guy on stardot called sirmorris who had a bunch of pcb's made up and supplied me with 2 pcbs, user port cables and roms for £10 each (£20 in total). As good as a turbo mmc with out the high cost, more expensive than diy but less effort. He might have some left as he had "a shedload" 18 months ago. His blog is here and should have contact details if you are not on stardot. Why are you not on stardot?
As for the best way to modernise the beeb, that would be the retroclinic datacentre. None available at the moment but I spoke to Mark yesterday at the Wakefield RISC OS show and he should have some later this year.
Thank you all for the suggestions, I will take the route of Turbo MMC or The Stardot deal.
if i am able to subscribe to Stardot, can get past the secret question
