Heh, nope not even AROS believe it or not. Bit behind on the open source miggy stuff too. Although I can't see any small businesses using it for the time being .

Since I do recruitment of IT freelancers, this sounds incredible.

No one with tthose certificates including Cisco CCNA is unemployed here:Doh:

There must be something wrong. However I can't speak for UK market.

I don't see much linux requests here! Advice: become a programmer.

Just to expand a little... I notice there are a lot of veteren IT people here... What would you guys recommend for an IT Tech that wants experience with Linux? As it is I'm having a little trouble finding work. I dont drive which is against me but I feel my skills are becoming a little rusty as I've now been unemployed for almost a year. I'm CompTIA A+ certified and have an MCP for desktop support. I also did Ciscos CCNA course passing all 4 CCNA modules without any prior networking experience but decided against taking the final exam as it was a bit above my career level and was lacking in any real experience with Cisco stuff. I'm not one of those people who is happy walking around with a cert I'm not confident I could prove my worth in.

Suffice to say I wouldnt mind learning a few new OS besides MS which is all I have experience with at the moment. Linux I feel would be a good place to start especially if I can get into the server distribs... I also wouldnt mind getting to know Apple OS a little better as I haven't really dabbled with it much even in the old days...

Advice?

P.S. Sorry to go slightly off topic and possibly temporarily hijack a thread...

I need to change countries by the sounds of it

Messed around with a few, but Ubuntu serves me fine. I guess I have good luck or something, as it has never broken between upgrades.

Just finished upgrading my workstation to Linux Mint 10. I'm quite please with it.

Used Freespire for years until i discovered Ubuntu...not looked back since.

Well I am in the process of installing Edubuntu for the kids, from all preliminary reading its going to get the job done. Thanks everyone for sharing your opinions, I truly appreciate the good responses and recommendations.

How did you get on?

I was thinking about AndyLandy's post about red hat. Made me think I have only used Debian based os's. (I dont use windows at all)

I decided to use my spare partitions for some tests. My rig is simple:

ATi x800, p4 3.4ghz with 1.5 gig ram. Not great but plenty to run an OS

Started off with Mandriva KDE4. wow has KDE4 got nice and fast now, Loved the way mandriva made it all fit together, But KDE4 still gets laggy if you have lots of stuff open and running. This is no good.

Tried mandriva Gnome, lots of issues here with crashes.

Moved on to opensuse, I hate the way I am forced to start with compiz desktop effects. Its great fun to use the linux cube and wobbly windows as a first time user, but after two years it gets boring. opensuse should do what mandriva does and ask at install if I want compiz installed. It didnt so it was deleted.

Fedora, wow what a distro. Wish I tried this ages ago. Looks great, fast install. Very stable so far. Using the Gnome edition. I also think rpm packages install faster then deb's. I have used debs for two years so was a little scared about going to rpm. I find rpm very nice to use.

Thanks AndyLandy, if you had not mentioned Red Hat which made me think RPM I would not have tested these distro's.

Still have not tried Red Hat itself but I will get around to it.

Screenshot of os so far, still needs some work on conky:
