This is at least somewhat retro-oriented.

I got a Loewe Aconda tv. that was around eur 3700 back in the day (day = ten years ago). The image quality of that TV is superb, and I'm not going to replace it anyday soon, maybe in 2-3 years.

However, the dvd player died. And the selection of dvd players is fairly scarce. Plus the blu-ray players have fun features like wifi, DLNA etc.

However, not surprisingly most blu ray players seem to be hdmi centric, only offering composite as analouge choice. Which kind of sucks, given the TV supports svideo, rgb and component.

So do anyone have a purchase advice on a blu-ray (or advanced dvd player) that does all the fun modern stuff in the gbp 100-ish region that outputs to svideo, rgb or component - or even VGA? So that the time I downgrade to a LCD panel I can reap the benifits of having owned a blu ray player for a while.

Just get a PS3, they're cheap enough 2nd hand and it's still one of the best blu-ray spinners around, will do hdmi, component, rgb scart etc all fine with the correct cable :)

Not to mention its one of the only ones that is upgradable. Oh and it plays games, or so I've heard :)

Given your circumstances, I agree a second hand/user PS3 - perhaps the phat version sounds ideal.

It has all the usual SD outputs as well as being software upgradeable (and HDD upgradeable).

Trying to find a standalone player with SD output may be tricky and probably cost the same as a PS3.

Bonus for you - can play games too and use it as a media center.

I also agree with this. The PS3 is your best option. Has all the outputs you need. Also you can get the official bluetooth remote to make it feel like a proper standalone player when watching movies.
