I am sure it will be relatively simple and there are lots of technical descriptions of how the serial shift register works (74LS165N).

There should be no need for a real 74LS165N it should be possible to emulate it in FW just like it is done in this Open Source CD32 pad adapter for PSX. (Yes it is for a different MCU but it should be possible to extract the relevant bits)
