They just... die? Shuts down...

Also in that episode:

Kryten: are you not a panthiest?
Lister: Yes I just dont beleive computers go to heaven too, I'm not a frying-panthiest!

ROFL, epic moments...

All is not lost. Here are 2 websites that you can use to order the correct PCB for your drive

http://www.hdd-parts.com/
http://www.onepcbsolution.com/

It isn't exactly cheap but if you don't have a backup its better than losing data.

I have used them before to replace the PCB on a 120GB SATA drive that had corrosion on the PCB.

Be wary, if you do manage to get an RMA on it they are unlikely to send you the same drive back so you'll lose the data on it.

Theres no such place as silicone heaven

There are quite a few women such as Pamela Anderson, Jordan, and quite a few other ladies who seem to have terrible trouble keeping their clothes on *cough*, that might disagree with that statement...

thanks but my drive don`t seem to be on either of those sites
for ref mine is
HDT721010SLA360

thanks for ya support every one, there be a time in my life if something like this happend I be ringing my supplier to bury my head in an opiate euphoric state

so really do appreciate ya all, Big thanks, still a bit miffed but am sure it will sort its self out one way or another after all its not every day you see flames inside ya pc case

Sorry I couldn't be of help. I will add though - if you decide to buy another identical drive and do a PCB swap, make sure that EVERY number matches. I bought one with a newer firmware (but every other number matched) and it wouldn't work with my drive.

hdd-parts.com gave me a PCB with the exact same firmware and that one worked.

@CosmicFrog.

You were'nt quick enough to catch the magic smoke, will have you drop you some in the post, ;).

I do remember seeing a simular type of problem, oldish drive, new psu and w00f!!!!!, there goes the magic smoke.
I replaced two diodes and then it worked, :).

The main problem SATA drives are they lacks the power protection the old IDE (PATA) drives use to have.

A not-so-good PSU and they bit the bullet... I have a 360Gb drive that simply got "pop" on me for my very own dismay.

Magic smoke by post?? wow now thats what ya call service!

I`m sure someone will offer to replace the component for you then can prey it works...
