Hi,

I am looking to "upgrade" my flat C128 and looking through the web and thinking it might be good idea/fun to try DiscoHR / BWack Kernal Switcher. I search the web and gone throught most of the links from google search and I could not find info howto have either dual or quad kernals on the C128. I have ordered all the parts, and now just need how to.

I have the SID2SID mod installed but would like now to try either SIDFx or MixSID. Any recommendations?

Third and final question - is it beneficial to convert this NTSC 128 to PAL 128?

Hi,
about ROM switcher:
i am pretty sure You will get "how to" manual with Your kernal switcher DIY set - usually sellers are posting these kits with it. have installed 4 in 1 board with mechanical switch, but to be honest - i'm using JiffyDos only, so other three roms just taking place without any usage

SID2SID is too primitive in my opinion since a lot of settings are missing. i own MixSID (also offering DIY sets here on AmiBay) - it's a powerful and very flexible board. "Must have" for the people who likes SID sounds

About NTSC 128 to PAL 128:
it depends on the games You have/play.. for me PAL version is more preferred cause i'm playing PAL games, also almost all demo's are created for PAL..as i said - it's up to You

thanks.

The ROM Switcher I am talking about is this https://github.com/discoHR/C64C-C128-multikernal-adapter

the pcb is on the way from OSH Park and the parts on the way from China via AliExpress. The infos that I found on youtube is for the C64 no info for the C128.

As for the SID, mixSID is also on github so I might order the PCB using OSH Park and again parts from China.

thanks.

oh, i see...
if you are able to build these - i belive there will be no problem to install them, all you need - is to look in to C128 schematics.
Regarding MixSID - you will also need a programmer to program GAL chip
Please be careful with chinese chips, as these are rebranded quite often. as many chips on MixSID are installed without a socket - it will be a real pain to swap these out. Second problem is when you open a dispute - seller will send you a quality certificate (on chinese) and Aliexpress will decide he had won the dispute, so you will end up with broken chips and without your money. You've been warned.

Look at the schematics is fine with me.

but there are a few things that are unclear here is where to install the switcher -

  • on the 128 ROM socket? If it is any connections between the 128 ROM and 64 ROM? i.e. wires to connect the two ROMs.
  • Do I need Two new EEProms for the 128 ROM and 64 ROM or just the 128 ROM?

I own the SidFX and its great.
Being able to switch SIDs from software is very nice, there are already SID players which support it.

I'm not sure if its currently being sold, but if you can find one, don't hesitate!
