Is there a C64 datasette emulator that would allow me to play .TAP files saved on an SD Card? I know there are devices that stream audio from mobile phones and so on, but that is not quite what I need, thanks :)

@everblue

Hello there, there are a few options for you, one I should mention is the SD2IEC adaptor that emulates (with close approximation) a 1541 Disk Drive. You can convert your TAP files to DISK or PRG files and load them, with increased speed to your Commodore64.

A wile back r0jaws and I had a play with an MP3 player that was in fact a cassette tape with an induction head that would - when the system played the tape would activate the MP3 file - we had mixed results with this solution some almost loading completely but sadly, I think we had a settings issue that made the volume of the file too low for a complete load.

Here is the set up we got to play with (without the car charger) -

Cassette MP3 (SDCard) player £5.99 + £2.47 Postage (ebay.co.uk BIN - Buy It Now)

NB* I am not affiliated with this sale

The Cassette MP3 player works with a SDCard (up to 8GB) - you prepare your .TAP files as an MP3 and then install it to the card place it inside the Cassette unit and then use like a cassette tape.

I did have more luck with this on the Spectrum, being able to load Saboteur as well as one of the earlier dizzies on the Amstrad CPC 464, however its wise to point out that your mileage will vary.

I hope that helps.

There's also this little project that I've been following it's more of a diy one but seems to be really making progress.

I can vouch for this being an excellent and cheap solution, you can build it very cheaply, and even throw it on a breadboard if you don't want to solder! Read the thread to follow the progress but thanks to the effort of sweetlilmre the device works very well indeed, for loading, saving and even copying tapes to and from a real datasette! See here for a couple of examples:

You can build it for less than £20
