Boom! :-) thanks Sputnik. First one to complete gets my money

I dont think the C64 Reloaded is a bad project, I hope he continues selling them a long time !

The cost might be a little high but remember ... Our old C64s will not live forever !
He should probably make a list of what C64 peripherals is tested and known to work.

Only thing that irritates me is that I have to source and install a SID and a CPU.
Im a notorius tenthumb. Shouldnt think that would still exist in the C64/Amiga retrocommunity but here I am ! :-D

Anyway, if any of the usual dealers start assembling full tested systems, Ill line up for two.. !
They can have two of my half working C64 for parts :-)

I wonder if the SwinSID micro would be able to be sold with this system ?

I wonder if it would have been possible to create a SID using an FPGA chip? That would have been pretty cool :)

Not sure if it's possible though because I think the SID chip was some kind of funky design.

Maybe for the CPU, do something like this -> 6510 -> 65816

:)

The Chameleon64 already has an FPGA-based SID implementation - though as you say, the actual SID is funkily-designed enough that a replica won't sound exactly the same.

the judgement call isn't on the value of this item in isolation. It's also the opportunity cost of something better that Jens could have designed instead.

Yeah, I do tend towards isolating a product when reviewing it, but I also see the value of pitting products against each other too. So understood.

In defence of Jens, even the most fanatical of runners have to relax and take a walk once in a while, and I'm pretty sure that he didn't mean to upset so many people by creating this project and putting it up for sale.

Many posts here make it sound as if the reloaded will do more harm than good. I might not see it as a recommended purchase, but I'm genuinely interested to hear the reasons why people think that the item's very existence is going to cause harm.

Sure, the old chips might not be as reliable as making new ones, but then who's to insist that the old chips must be used? Also, if people are to design their own chips, then it's possible that more c64s will be preserved if the designers use Jen's board instead of an antique.

It might sound unlikely, but then so did the likelihood of Jens designing the C64 reloaded. We all have our hobbies and habits, so there's at least the possibility.

This project reminds me of the analogue NT. Which is a whole new board and enclosure for the NES with RGB capability and more. It still uses the chips from the old console though.
But the 499$ price tag is making a lot of noise.
I personally approve this, even though I cant see myself pay that tag. Still it allows the soul of those old machines to be transferred to new bodies.
