Ok, not miggy related or even retro computer related but I just picked up a Laptop DVD RW drive complete with a JAE to 40 Pin IDE Adapter for £1!!

I had researched buying this upgrade for my faithful old Averatec system and had spotted a couple of cheap drives for about £35, but had put it off until I had a bit of extra cash spare.

The guy selling it said he bought it amongst a job lot of other gear and hadn't tested it to see if it worked, I thought it was worth the risk and couldn't believe he quoted me the price he said.

I even deliberately restated the fact that it was a laptop DVD Writer and he wasn't the least bit fussed.

Ok the Bezel isn't perfectly flush, but for a £1 I don't actually care. It works no problem too with 8x burn speed.

I have had the odd bargain before now, but this has been my best buy by a country mile.

(I also picked up a PS One, and 5 games for a fiver for the kids to play with so not a bad day all round)

Score! :D

A couple of years ago I got a pair of USB scanners for a pound or so, had a devil of a time finding drivers for one and when I did locate some it still didn't seem to work. The other one though was an easy download from the manufacturer's site, one swift install later and I had a fully working USB bus-powered scanner, I'm still using it today. :)

Re: Car Boot Sales, Score!

I definitely need to start visiting more car boot sales. I've never found anything good at any I've ever been to.

BTW, a great place to offload broken computer hardware is Cash Converters. They never check anything like flatbed scanners when you take them in to exchange them for cash so it's better than throwing them down the tip! I got £10 for a broken parallel port A4 scanner a while back from them. ;)
